Fighting games

I have been neglecting fighting games for several years, and would like to buy some older games for cheap just to memorize some moves and experience what people that were going through the series experienced.  What series would be worth playing the older games through, or at least getting used to character moves for playing a later sequel?

blazblue is a pretty hardcore game lol complex combos and strategies involved who else has played it
