Dear /comp/anions:

Seagate or Western Digital? and why?

Name: Anonymous 2009-05-18 17:12

Either or. Hard disk drive manufacturers don't suck like they used to. If this was still THE 1990'S I would have recommended Quantum NO EXCEPTIONS

I myself would probably go with a Seagate but Western Digital never gave me any problems.

i've only got experience with WD, Samsung and Maxtor discs, but I am very satisfied with my WD and Samsungs.
Maxtor on the other hand... pile of shit.

Hmm.. I have a 6 GB Maxtor on my old computer (manufactured in 1998) and it still has yet to show me any problems. I haven't used Scandisk on it in years though. But then again, I hardly ever use the comp anymore.

MAXTOR == may as well insert broken bottles up your ass.

SEAGATE == used to be god tier, had dodgy build problems, will be working hard to recover

WD == currently god tier after recovering from dodgy build problems, will be working hard to stay ahead of SEAGATE

Don't forget *all* hard drives, even the good ones, suck.  Make sure you buy something with a warranty, MAKE SURE YOU TAKE BACKUPS.

All Maxtor drives since the Seagate merger are simply rebadged previous-generation Seagate designs sold for slightly less.  Anyone who isn't an armchair expert relying on worthless, outdated experience knows this.

Once upon a time, desktop Seagates were considered among the least reliable you could buy, and pre-Deathstar IBM was considered one of the best.  Shit changes all the time; keep up.

Heh, I had forgot all about the merger that happened back in 2006. Though I never considered Maxtor to be the epitome of hard drive reliability, just about all the Maxtors I used, I never (even still to this day) had problems with. Though these are all pre-merger Maxtors.

The current machine I'm using now has a Western Digital installed and it's been nothing but reliable for me. So I'd recommend them.

Don't change these.
