SMPlayer and MKV Files

Name: Anonymous 2008-04-27 16:36

So I've been spending the better part of the day trying to figure out how to make the shittastic MKV format work on my computer again (sometime between when I was watching Gurren Lagann and today it decided to go back to its old video lag shenanigans). Everywhere I go tells me that SMPlayer is an MKV player, and the SMPlayer website has an MKV file being played right there on a screenshot just to show how great it is at playing MKV files. So I load an MKV file into the player... and it plays a whole millisecond of audio with no image and then ceases playing. What the fuck is this shit?

Mplayer, Xine, VNC... any decent player will play your MKV files. Just use a decent player.

MKV files have a history of laggy video and subs on my computer. Every answer I can find is some bullshit about my computer being shitty, but if that were true than I wouldn't have been able to make MKV files work all that time ago.

I think mkv is russian format

MKV is a (very interesting) audio/video container and NOT and audio/video codec. Whatever codec used to compress the audio or video data contained within the MKV file is of no consequence to the MKV demuxer. You need to find out which codecs are contained within each MKV file and find out if your player supports playing that codec from within a MKV file.

So the fact that thousands of people are enjoying lag-free MKV goodness all the time and you being one of the few that seem to have trouble doesn't make you think twice about that?

Why yes, the fact that I already managed to make MKV files work last year makes me think twice about that. Unless a gremlin cast a magic spell on my computer that made it worse?

Well there's your problem. You should go ask on a forum about gremlins about how to take care of them because we're no experts on that here.

Yeah trolls we can handle, but gremlins are way out of our league

If you can manage to catch the gremlin you can force it to reverse the spell so you can play your mkv files again

Please read >>5 again, understand it then get back to us. The problem is not with the MKV file (assuming the MKV file is valid). MKV is a container format and NOT a codec. You need to find out which codec is being used and find out whether your media player supports demuxing AND decoding these codecs from the MKV file.

Excuse me OP has already explained that his computer was attcked by a gremlin I think you need to read >>7 again I understand mkv is a file format and the files are not the problem, it is the computer because the gremlin cast a spell - its like I'm trying to explain something to RedCream

MKV is a container and not a codec. This explains why one can play one MKV file and not another - the media player might not be able to handle to codecs contained within the container. You can contain WMV + MP3 streams within an MKV container. You can contain an XVID + WAV streams within an MKV container. You can contain Theora + Monkey Audio streams within an MKV container. You can contain h.264 + Quicktime Audio streams within an MKV container. You can contain Theora + Flac streams within an MKV container. >>1 needs to find out which codec combination is contained within the MKV container. Then >>1 needs to find out if the media player supports decoding and demuxing this combination.
