SMPlayer and MKV Files

Name: Anonymous 2008-04-27 16:36

So I've been spending the better part of the day trying to figure out how to make the shittastic MKV format work on my computer again (sometime between when I was watching Gurren Lagann and today it decided to go back to its old video lag shenanigans). Everywhere I go tells me that SMPlayer is an MKV player, and the SMPlayer website has an MKV file being played right there on a screenshot just to show how great it is at playing MKV files. So I load an MKV file into the player... and it plays a whole millisecond of audio with no image and then ceases playing. What the fuck is this shit?

MKV is a container and not a codec. This explains why one can play one MKV file and not another - the media player might not be able to handle to codecs contained within the container. You can contain WMV + MP3 streams within an MKV container. You can contain an XVID + WAV streams within an MKV container. You can contain Theora + Monkey Audio streams within an MKV container. You can contain h.264 + Quicktime Audio streams within an MKV container. You can contain Theora + Flac streams within an MKV container. >>1 needs to find out which codec combination is contained within the MKV container. Then >>1 needs to find out if the media player supports decoding and demuxing this combination.
