S.M.A.R.T.

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-08 4:28

Hay guyz,
My hard drive reports 240 S.M.A.R.T. errors. Mostly read/write. Time to replace?

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-08 5:46

No. Wait until you lose important data and whine about it on /comp/, like the other morons.

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-08 6:13

Good, I'll do that.
Any hints how I could retrieve my data, somehow copying doesn't really want to work, i.e. completely crashes my system (booting from CD).
There is not a lot I need to get from there, as most of it is already redundant. Could my IDE-controller mess with me, so another PC would be more successful in retrieving my wanted data?

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-08 6:25

While we're at it, is there a basic and easy to fix a broken partition or retrieve the data from it? Since EasyRecovery pretty much fails on me and can't use network drives I don't have a proper tool on my boot-cd (I think at least).

In other news - thank god it's not my porn hard disk, only the one with windows and all. Losing my porn, that would be important data lost!

So far I got everything valueable from the first partition, then I'll go over to the next working one. Maybe chkdsk or testdisk can fix the broken one, since it could just be a broken MFT I have there.

Meanwhile some funny stuff from smartctl:

Running command: X:\Programs\smartmontools\smartctl.exe -a /dev/hda

Smartctl? I'm running fsck. Your failure is total.

Oh sure, you're running fsck on a NTFS partition.
Also I didn't use smartctl for an integrity check, just to get the S.M.A.R.T. data. Durr.

If anyone should care - I got almost everything of my hard disk backed up, just in time as it seems. Few hours after the backup (and booting from it again lol) it more or less completely broke down. First I got flooded with read/write errors, then it started to make funny noises. Now all it does is blocking the complete system, so I can't even get my last pieces of smart data.

The disk's failure is total.

Just for the record, SMART is a poor indicator of drive health -- it doesn't trigger failure soon enough.  Google's study of hard drive health (they sure as hell own enough of them to know) suggests that SMART doesn't predict failure well for an individual drive.  On the other hand, any drive with bad sectors (aka reallocated sectors) is on its deathbed.

Problem is that hard drives have been transparently working around bad sectors for years now. During normal operation you won't notice shit, until there are so many of them that the drive can't keep up any more and you notice strange behavior. And at that point it might be hard to recover all your data in time.

A good RAID controller with monitoring software running all the time might help, if it reports these bad sector incidents. Any other ideas that don't involve physically scanning the whole drive surface regularly (which again stresses the drive)?
