Linux

Ok everyone, I'm thinking of switching to linux because I've heard great things about it, so I was wondering which linux based os I should go for. I'm just looking for one that I can use the internet on, since I have my games on another installation of xp. Basically I want to run live messenger, utorrent and limewire or something similar. Also will I need to get any virus protection, since I download some risky stuff.

ubuntu

>I have my games on another installation of xp

Have fun having to reboot every 20 minutes. Kinda beats the purpose of using linux.

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-23 4:06

Ubuntu, install VirtualBox, run XP through Virtualbox without ever rebooting.

I run a e6600 + 4gig ram + 8600GT + Linux host + Xp through virtualbox. Games don't run well enough. FarCry no aa no hdr gets 14fps tops on that setup.

If you're a casual user don't bother, I use Linux myself and would never recommend it to someone like yourself, it has a steep learning curve and IS NOT OPEN SOURCE WINDOWS.

Most of your Windows apps won't run, a lot of them will with WINE(http://winehq.org) but it's still in development and a little buggy.

If you do switch be prepared to spend a few days learning everything and be patient when you fuck something up and have to either fix it through a text interface or reinstall.

no, unless your dualbooting with windows and are paranoid/stupid

Ubuntu is best for new users, and thay just released the new version of it too!

Don't bother with linux unless you enjoy typing endless streams of gibberish into a terminal - you won't get anything done any other way, the GUI is too primitive. Knoppix is useful and all, but other than that, XP is acually a stable and configurable system, and sadly there isn't anything better, so stick with it.

Don't bother with windows unless you enjoy clicking away endless streams of popups saying "Error - no error" - you won't get anything done any other way, the CLI is too primitive. edlin.com is useful and all, but other than that, Arch Linux is acually a stable and configurable system, and sadly there isn't anything better, so stick with it.

I need it to access the internet
SORRY LINUX AND THE OPEN SOURCE COMMUNITY ARE WORKING ON THIS BUT THEY ARE EXPECTING IT TO BE COMPLETE IN 2010

Linux is *not* user friendly, and until it is linux will stay with >1% marketshare.

Take installation. Linux zealots are now saying "oh installing is so easy, just do apt-get install package or emerge package": Yes, because typing in "apt-get" or "emerge" makes so much more sense to new users than double-clicking an icon that says "setup".

Linux zealots are far too forgiving when judging the difficultly of Linux configuration issues and far too harsh when judging the difficulty of Windows configuration issues. Example comments:

User: "How do I get Quake 4 to run in Linux?"
Zealot: "Oh that's easy! If you have Feisty Fawn, you have to download quake_4_feisty_i686_060607_glibc.bin, then do chmod +x on the file. Then you have to su to root, make sure you type exportLD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 but ONLY if you have the stock kernel installed. If you don't, don't set that environment variable or the installer will dump core. Before you run the installer, make sure you have the GL drivers for X installed. Get them at [some obscure web address], chmod +x the binary, then run it, but make sure you have at least 10MB free in /tmp or the installer will dump core. After the installer is done, edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and add a section called "GL" and put "driver nv" in it. Make sure you have the latest version of X and Linux kernel 2.6 or else X will segfault when you start. OK, run the Quake 4 installer and make sure you set the proper group and setuid permissions on quake4.bin. If you want sound, look here [link to another obscure web site], which is a short HOWTO on how to get sound in Quake 4. That's all there is to it!"

User: "How do I get Quake 4 to run in Windows?"
Zealot: "Oh God, I had to install Quake 4 in Windoze for some lamer friend of mine! God, what a fucking mess! I put in the CD and it took about 3 minutes to copy everything, and then I had to reboot the fucking computer! Jesus Christ! What a retarded operating system!"

So, I guess the point I'm trying to make is that what seems easy and natural to Linux geeks is definitely not what regular people consider easy and natural. Hence, the preference towards Windows.

And then was born pc-bsd www.pcbsd.org

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-29 19:39

But apart from that I agree with you, we should take care of what we consider user-friendly or not because we're used to this system

>Yes, because typing in "apt-get" or "emerge" makes so much more sense to new users than double-clicking an icon that says "setup".

Package managers with GUIs have existed for many, many years, and in Ubuntu's case specifically, most users will find using the Add/Remove Software option in the main menu much more userfriendly than searching the internet to find an application that does a certain thing.

ubuntu is good. i don't think you can get a virus on linux. as for messenger, you'll have to run amsn and i know for sure linux runs frostwire and torrents shits. as for linux being driven by market...well linux is driven by people who hate microsoft and their passion for writing code for the hell of it

No, it's because of "HURR NEWFAG WHO'S BEEN HERE LONGER THAN MEIS NEWFAGGY" morons like you that the Linux community spends it's time wanking over the possibility of porting FANTASTIC WINDOWS APPS LIKE UTORRENT (LOL ENJOY UR OWNED BY BITTORRENT), LIVE MESSENGER (BECAUSE UBUNTU AND IT'S MANY "USER-FRIENDLY" RELATIVES DON'T HAVE ENOUGH BLOAT, AMIRITE), AND LIMEWIRE (FUCK YEAH, GNUTELLA IN A SHITTY FORMAT, GEE WHIZ I'M SWITCHING BACK TO WINDOWS RIGHT NOW).

Linux is good to get massive amounts of computing work done..say like setting up complex and SECURE servers and work environments.

Windows is good for pretty much leisurely pleasure stuffs.

I use both..and to be honest, I enjoy the complete power I have over my system in linux (debian for the win) but I enjoy the ease of use when it comes to windows. Seriuosly...put game CD in and you can get a game.

I cant get starcraft to run right in WINE. it runs at like 10FPS with no sound and shitty resolution.

It is because of the horrible mess with games that Linux will never overtake the casual use..even with distros like Ubuntu (god bless them they're trying)

I mean for fucks sake...even apple is starting to catch on and grab games.

Linux is bad for security, it's way too bloated.

If you want a truly secure system -- use OpenBSD.

Name: Anonymous 2007-11-02 13:48

Oh, and Starcraft ran perfectly for me with minimal setup when I last tried it.
