Ok everyone, I'm thinking of switching to linux because I've heard great things about it, so I was wondering which linux based os I should go for. I'm just looking for one that I can use the internet on, since I have my games on another installation of xp. Basically I want to run live messenger, utorrent and limewire or something similar. Also will I need to get any virus protection, since I download some risky stuff.

>Yes, because typing in "apt-get" or "emerge" makes so much more sense to new users than double-clicking an icon that says "setup".

Package managers with GUIs have existed for many, many years, and in Ubuntu's case specifically, most users will find using the Add/Remove Software option in the main menu much more userfriendly than searching the internet to find an application that does a certain thing.
