Any advice on routers? I'm in the market for one in my new house so I can get wireless access throughout.

Sort of on topic. I need a router that DOESN'T have a retarded 500KiB/s speed cap for dl. My cable internet is rated at 6MB/s (but actually much higher), and I'm tired of this slowdown.

There is a difference between megabits and megabytes. Transfer speed is generally rated in megabits (Mbps) whereas file size is rated in megabytes (MBps). These are normally confused, as the only difference is a case sensitive B.
MBps(filesize) = Mbps(Transfer rating)/8
So at six, your speed will probably cap at less than 1 megabyte per second, which is still very fast. But 500KB is probably less than your rating. You'll probably want a 10/100 router, i'd recommend going with the basic linksys wrt54g/gs/gl and flashing the firmware to the open source dd-wrt for increased functionality.
if you want to look into the dd-wrst firmware more just search for it at wikipedia.

Yeah, I know there's a difference between the two... HOWEVER, internet speeds are advertised and rated in megabits. I know for certain that I have broken the 6 megabit barrier by downloading at TWO MEGABYTES per second before I installed my router. Now, after the router is installed, it limits the bandwidth to 500 Kilobytes per second.
What I'm asking for is recommendations of a router that does not have this low a cap without the need to resort to custom firmware.

That's a viable option, actually. However, I'd still prefer a smaller solution without the need to build another comp. Does anybody know if the CISCO851-K9 router has a speed cap and what it is?
yeah? check Linksys's forums for the exact problem I'm seeing. wrt54g is utterly useless encased in a room of concrete and surrounded by steel far away from all of the wireless units. also, 500KiB (kibibytes, you know, 2^x) is just shy of 4 megabits: learn to convert

compiling the linux kernel is easy and can be done with any distro, you ignorant fuck.

My Netgear RP114 that is like seven years old lets me download at about 900 KiB/s. When I replaced it with an OpenBSD box (which only does briding since I don't need the router; specs: 333MHz, 64MB, an old 100 card and a newer 1000 card) I can now download at 1000KiB/s.
