My Crosshair has has an AD1988B chipset. That chipset does do 7.1 Sound is decent for onboard.

asus, especially in the a7n* line, had really good onboard audio chips. Guess they don't anymore

Not all of them. Soundstorm was only on the Deluxe versions...
