Preventing xterm from closing

Name: Anonymous 2007-03-30 8:02 ID:VZO8yhWU

Hi everyone.

I'm using the newest version of xterm and icewm window manager on Debian GNU/Linux. I have set up multiple workspaces and xterm is normally open on workspace number 1. My problem is that whenever I want to terminate some programs on other workspaces I keep closing xterm accidentally with the Alt + F4 keyboard shortcut. Is there any way to "lock" xterm, to prevent it from closing or to get it to ask me for confirmation before closing? If possible please do not sugest using any defferent window managers / terminals, I'd like stick to the ones I prefer. :-)

Any help will be greatly apperciated!

Can't you edit the icewm's keyboard shortcuts ? if true, this wm is pure faggotry.

Use ^q to close programs, you Windows-user.  NOTE: Only works in sane applications.

Thanks for your replies.

Changing the shortcut from Alt + F4 to Ctrl + Q is not going to fix anything. Instead of closing xterm with other applications accidentally with Alt + F4  I will keep terminating them with Ctrl + Q (or ^Q or C-Q if you prefer it this way). Please read the OP again, it says "whenever I want to terminate some programs on other workspaces I keep closing xterm accidentally".

I'm not a windows user. I removed it from my HDD one year ago.

xterm doesn't listen to ^q as a quit event.  ^q is the resume control code you can use after locking your terminal with ^s.

Oh wait, I get it ;)  Do what >>2 said, and remove the Alt-F4 mapping.

You really shouldn't be using Alt-Fx to switch workspaces though.  Alt-F2 is the ubiquitous shortcut to bring up a launch application window.

Sorry, I guess I haven't explained my problem properly and it seems to be causing confusion. :-(

I use Alt + Ctrl + Left/Right to switch between desktops and Alt + F4 to close stuff. I'm used to this shortcut, it was set up this way by default on icewm (seriously), IT DOES NOT INTERFERE WITH ANYTHING.

The problem is: let's say I have 5 firefox windows open + some program running on xterm I really don't want to interrupt - In order to close all 5 firefox windows I have to press the CLOSE SHORTCUT (whether it's Alt + F4 or not does not matter) 5 times. If I accidentally press it 6 times all the data in xterm is lost and I have to retrieve it from backup files.

Sorry again.

Ok.
First : xterm is old, there are other terms that are as light as xterm, like mrxvt or urxvt if you use unicode but has more features.
- Search in icewm documentation (I don't know this wm), since it's the one that manage you windows (o rly?) see if it implements this feature or not.
- type & after your program name, so when you close xterm, it's still running and you can go in it again
- and/or use screen.

Thanks for your advice!

I'll try messing around with different icewm settings, terminals, re-attaching the gnu screen etc and see which method works the best for me. Then I'll post back. :-)

Thanks everyone!

OP here.

screen -r

Is exactly what I was looking for. Whenever my screen session "dies" because I close xterm I can revive it with this command.

Thx!

Fail for using xterm. rxvt is where it's at.
