I have money to throw around and I want a better mac than my Mini. However, I am not homosexual yet so I can't buy an overpriced box from Steve. I'm thinking of making a custom-built Hackintosh, but I can't figure out whether it's a good idea to do it because all the osx86 information available on the Internets seems to be outdated so I don't know what to expect in terms of very long-term stability and annoyances. (would I be still be able to update the software regularly in 3 years for example?)
Here's what I need from that computer:
1. Running the last major version of OS X at all times
2. Running Parallels
3. Running Opera
4. Supports dual-screen
5. Supports about 20 USB devices at the same time (told you about the money thing) - stupid mini whines about it no matter what setup of powered hubs I use
Should I build it or bend over? Your opinion is appreciated.
how am i to reg a nick to get on the #4chan channel on mirc?

Run Gentoo with sick CFLAGS instead. It runs Opera too, by dropping it to /opt.

Hmm? Why not?
You need an iMac (why not a first gen Core Duo model? They'll be even cheaper soon given that the iMac is about to be revised again) and fuck knows about your USB shit but I am sure you could just get a better hub (or five.) I'm sorry that your first experience with Apple was being fucked in the ass but iy's your own fault for buying a retarded mac mini and not a proper computer.
That first gen Intel iMac is right now $850 or so on eBay and $950 as a refurb from Apple. Just eBay your monitor, broken hubs, etc, buy the iMac and better hubs and then you don't have to worry about all that convoluted OSX86 upkeeping shit. Plus the iMac won't lose half its value two months after you buy it.

You need an iMac
Upgarding to an iMac wouldn't be much of an upgrade. When I bought my mini it had the same specs as the least expensive iMac. Anyway, there's a display in those things. I already have (better) displays.
If Steve wouldn't mind selling me something right between the iMac and the Mac Pro, without a display, I'd probably buy, but looks like those marketing geniuses think that somebody who won't shell out $2000 but is too cheap for the $500 box is way too much of a dumbshit to connect a screen to a box. Mac Pros are way too expensive for what they offer anyway. I want to spend about $1300 but not on a display.

Yes, it would be an upgrade, as you wouldn't be burdened with a piece of shit 2.5" HD and you'd have more than a few extra mhz, even if you compare the fastest mini to the slowest C1D iMac. It's not an immense upgrade, I suppose, but in my experience almost all UI lag etc issues in OS X tend to come down to storage speed. Oh, and you could actually play games on it if you wanted.
Lots of people whine about not having a box between the mac mini and Mac Pro. They all fail to realise this is the iMac, and that unless they 1. Are a graphic designer that needs a great monitor and 2. Are such a failure of a graphic designer that they can't afford to buy the iMac and use it as a secondary monitor, they are deluded because they don't think it makes sense to sell what they already have.
Let go of your monitor, however much you like it. eBay it and get the iMac - it's everything you want otherwise, you're just making it an issue because you can't let go of the monitor. If you sell your display for $200 you have enough in your budget for the 20" C2D iMac, and you'll come out ahead if you get the $150 edu discount. (Did I mention there's a new one out real soon now? It'll be even better than your Mac mini then..)

Awesome up your fucking ass, but not in a desktop computer.

Letting go of the displays is a downgrade no matter what.
And what is Apple's policy on dead pixels? AFAIK it's still "Oh lawd you got a dead pixel? Well we think that's OK, have a nice day sir"
Also, by building it I can use a small 10000 RPM apps drive and a huge 7200 one.

And by getting the iMac you get a computer that is not HUEG with the constant roar of thunder.
Look, I guess you can stick with this hackintosh idea, but my subjective impressions of that are that it involves constant tweaking and fixing and system problems - the sort of stuff you are supposed to buy a Mac to avoid. I really think if you let go your previous PC-building habits you'll not regret buying an iMac. I was hesitant at first too, but owning one changed my mind.
As for the dead pixels, I've only got one little inconspicuous one out of the four Macs I've ever owned (and it's the POS MacBook.) My iMac 17" has none and my friend's 24" has none either. I suppose you could get screwed if you were unlucky but then again, I did mention eBay, didn't I? Ask a seller.

Why would you want to turn a PC into Apple stuff and run OSX on it? That'd make you at least bisexual.

There are multiple alternatives, just like in Windows. (They also all suck, just like in Windows, so you should eventually find yourself moving back to the dock and understanding\appreciating it if you do ever use OS X.

Not an alternative, but Quicksilver made the dock pretty much irrelevant to me. It's not like it gets in the way when set to auto-hide.

HI, I'M RICHARD STALLMAN, FOUNDER AND CEO OF THE GNU ENVIRONMENT AND COMMUNIST'S SOFTWARE ENGINEERING PHILOSOPHIC COMMUNITY NAMED THE FSF. AS THE SEVENTH DAY WAS COMING, AFTER I INVENTED FREEDOM, COMMUNISM AND LSD, I WAS A LITTLE TIRED AND DECIDED TO REST. AS MY HIPPIES COMMUNITY WERE ENJOYING THEMSELVES BY DEBBUGING FASTLY AND EFFICIENTLY DUKE NUKEM FOREVER (BECOME IT WILL TAKE FOREVER TO ACHIEVE IT) WITH MY WONDERFUL TOOL GDB, 2 OF THEM GET AWAY FROM THE REST OF THE GROUP, A MAN AND A WOMAN, HIDING THEMSELVES FROM THE SUN UNDER AN APPLE TREE. THE WOMAN GAVE THE MAN THE FORBIDDEN FRUIT WHILE SHAKING HIS ASS FRENETICALLY, SO THIS MORON, SO DROVE MORE BY HORMONeS RATHER THAN NEURONS, TURNED HIS BACK TO MY LAW AND BITE IN THE APPLE. HER DEMONIC RUSE WORKED. HE BEGAN TO STEAL OUR CODE, SHOUTING AT US "NOW IT'S MINE AND YOU WON'T GET IT ANYMORE, AND I WILL LET KNOW TO EVERYONE THAN I'VE MADE IT, YOU'RE SCREWED FUCKING HIPPIES!". HE THEN BECAME OUR OPPOSITE, BUILD CAPITALISM AGAINST COMMUNISM, SELFISH PROFIT AGAINST COMMUNITY PROFIT, AND SOLD OUR WORK UNDER THE NAME OF THE FORBIDDEN FRUIT THAT TOOK AWAY HIM FROM US FOR 5000$ TO IGNORANTS OF THE REAL TRUTH. TO AVOID THIS TO HAPPEN AGAIN, IN A GREAT TORNADO OF WISDOM, I CREATED THE GNU/GPL LICENSE. NOW YOU KNOW WHY PROPRIETARY SOFWARES ARE A REAL THREAT FOR HUMANITY.

Also, why are you guys so pissy about mac users, granted alot of them may be retarded for buying overly priced hardware but I think that in all the software in it's self is fine. It's just an expensive BSD for 'average' users.

Yeah, Apple should work on some frameworks or a development environment or something. Maybe put some sort of focus on developing apps. Right now it's kind of a wasteland

Don't worry about that -- high quality apps are available for the low-low price of $5000 a piece.
