Windows Vista - Worth It?

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-19 22:01

Topic.

It doesn't matter. Vista will be forced on the accepting public and Linux will never become as popular of a desktop as windows because of that. Game companies develop for strictly windows and nothing else because that's where the mass amount of consumers are, which are there because the developers are developing strictly for that system.

Similar to the whole media format issues. Format X will rule over format Y because the porn industries favor format X.

Charles Manson has a better shot at stability than does Windows.

"vista like all other versions of windows wont really become stable til after SP2... or 3 or 4 or..."

I'm new to XP (with SP2). I was quite pleased with the quick two download Windows update.....

Then last night when I went to shutdown a screen appeared saying the first of 47 updates was being installed.

Figures, Windows is the patchwork quilt of the interbutts.

Just wait until BITS service decides to crap out and die. You'll spend the better part of a day googling for how to make Windows Update work again.

Free hint: sfc.exe /scannow ... Have XP CD handy

I just got around to installing the XP Professional I bought two years ago. I tend to stay in my Linux partition at the house until the need for gaming grows irresistable or Visual Studio 6 is needed to twiddle some old legacy code.

I figure it will take me four years to get around to installing Vista.

vista in my ass ok
as my OS? FUCKBITCH

"I figure it will take me four years to get around to installing Vista."

That was my plan with W2K and I'm delighted to have gotten 7 years good hard use out of a Windows OS.
Apple should write a OSX that works with Windows boxen. <s>

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-21 11:16

Protip: currently, games still work on XP (maybe DX10 will end up running on XP, too).

Take your time, I still have to find someone that is pleased with it.

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-21 13:39

lets all switch to linux because of the penguins :)

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-21 15:09

Lets all switch to Linux to send Microsoft a gentle message to not be so anti-consumer the next time around.

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-21 16:36

Vista sucks, not because of backward compatibility, not because the new features are mostly useless non-functional junk for lusers (ooooh, transparent windowz looool liek Star Trek!), not because it makes a decent machine feel like a 486, not because you need $5000 please like Apple faggots to buy hardware to run it, not because it wastes your CPU and GPU power which you wanted for applications, but because of all the in-kernel DRM shit it has. You are no longer in control of your system; Microsoft backstabs its users by turning their computers into media corporations surveillance units.

XP and 2003 are the last operating systems by Microsoft that I'll ever use in a personal capacity. Vista is pure WTF.

If I'm going to sell my soul to a corporation, at least I'll enjoy it. Apple, here I come.

You know, I would. In fact I have, for the past decade.

And I now loathe Linux. It's so full of shit and fail I can't take it any more. Once upon a time I was happy to spend my days hacking around with it, but now I just want my desktop to fucking work. I have a life and things to do.

Linux belongs in a server room, and it's great for development, but no way am I using it for desktop anymore.

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-23 15:06

I used Debian 'Woody' exclusively as a desktop for about two years starting in 99 and it never gave me shit

I didn't play a lot of video games but it was fine for browsing the net, playing counter-strike, mudding, and stuff. I think I used the Enlightenment window manager.

I think you fags have unrealistic expectations.

I dont know what kind of fucktard you are, but i don't have to "hack" with my desktop to get it to work properly. Go at shit and  GTFO.

In other words, you're a garden-variety light-weight teen^Wuser.

Just yesterday I had to mess with termcap and stty because of some errant CLI app. You'd think we were in the 70s and 80s again. Do you even know what termcap or stty is?

I'd rather have a Mac.

More liek hello 1990s. Some of the entries in there belong to the 80s and 70s.

Believe it or not, some people routinely use the CLI. Are you telling me you don't? And what happens when shit goes wrong? You'll end up in the guts anyway.

But okay, if we're talking "Desktop", can I bitch a bit about the myriad toolkits that all look different, behave different, and don't have consistent themes? Copy/paste is a fine one too. And while we're at it, the 3D performance on my machine sucks.

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-24 7:42

>>33
Unfortunately, termcap still needs edited on occasions as people still use software that depends on it.

You would be surprised.

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-24 8:42

I routinely use the CLI. I use it for everything I would use explorer for in windows, and then some. A terminal emulator is better than explorer in the same way vi is better than notepad, IMO.

If you have some kind of aversion to working in a shell, you can get the fuck out.

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-24 9:05

After writing, conservatively, one million lines in vim, I will *never* go back to an IDE like Visual Studio by choice ;)

Mainly because my source in Visual studio would be peppered with...

SHIT!

I've actually caught myself trying to do a macro in notepad before.

vim spoils you.

I'll have Vista, but I'll be damned if I'm paying for it. :D
I have a version of enterprise and the KMS server software, and will likely get a free copy of Ultimate.
But I don't see myself ever really getting rid of XP.
Bottom line, shiny windows are the only real reason as of right now to get Vista. >_>

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-26 19:40

Those shiny windows have terrible usability though.

Who the FUCK came up with Vista's UI? I could do a better job, and I'm no UI expert. Shit, a monkey could do a better job than that too.

However, you can set it to be pink AND shiny! I have yet to see a decent pink XP theme aside from windows classic. That's the only real argument aside from the non-shitty looking installer I can think of.

Amazing how you put so much truth into one sentence ;)

Seriously people, there is no reason why you would get vista, unless you want a cool interface or the **aa asshats will forbid making hddvd/bluray players for non-vista systems(less control can be excercised on pre-vista systems, but im sure vista can be hacked just as well), the other argument is dx10,but im sure that by the time dx10 becomes popular(not soon, since game producers want the widest audience), there will be some kind of emulator for the xp that makes dx10 work ;)
