So, I've got an older monitor (2000 or so,) running at 1200x1024 resolution, 60hz.
The manual that came with it states that's the highest refresh rate supported for this resolution. Any actual harm in bumping up to, say, 75hz? Or even 85hz?

Yes.

Yes and I'd even say to lower the resolution until you CAN bump it up to AT LEAST 72Hz, but 75Hz would be better for your eyes. Strained eyes are straaaaaaaaaaained.

Awww. I guess I should spring for a new monitor. ):
I had read (I believe on 4chan,) that the hz rating was a recommendation, and it could be raised higher without incident.
Still, I thought I'd ask the Computer board since it's a support thread.
Thank you, 4channers.

overclocking you CPU is one thing, and very good. overclocking your monitor is another thing, and very bad.

No because the monitor will refuse to try to sync to that. But it won't work. You can't overclock a monitor. Though you can do 1184×888 @ 75 Hz or 1600×888 @ 75 Hz with it, provided you have good drivers (as in, not ATI's). You'll want at least 80 Hz though, so I'll advise 1120×832 @ 80 Hz as the highest 4:3 resolution you use.

Thanks everyone. I'll be sure to just get a new monitor too, once I build a new PC.
