I'm a RETARD

Name: Anonymous 2006-11-13 23:30

Well, turns out that I don't have to do shit to get Kubuntu to have MPlayer as there is a convenient little installer program that will install it for me already waiting.  GUI MPlayer at that.  I'm a tard.  BUT!  It doesn't have codecs and when I try to put the codecs where they should go at /usr/local/lib/codecs/ the native unpacker program won't let me create the directory.  Something about permissions or something.

Also, the people who make MPlayer are incredibly smart retards for having all the controls in command line while the people who put together Kubuntu are full humans for making it so that even a tard like me can get most things to work.  Cheers to them.

I'm gonna see if VLC is in there somewhere because maybe it is useable by people who don't understand linux speak.

>won't let me create the directory
$ ls -ld /usr/local/lib
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 96 2006-11-13 07:51 /usr/local/lib/

You need to be root to create a directory there.

You obviously don't know shit about programming or software architecture, so STFU.

Do you know everything about how your car works?  Or all the other machines in your house?  It doesn't stop you from using them, does it?  It's the same with computers: you shouldn't have to be a programmer to work them.  Once again I salute the makers of Ubuntu and Kubuntu for realizing this.

Just like I expect a car to have a starter, alternator, spark plugs, and other various things I expect certain things out of a desktop environment.  I shouldn't have to hand crank my car and I shouldn't have to program to work my computer.

Also, VLC was in there and it's very user friendly.  Everything works now.  I also salute the makers of VLC player.

I know how my car works and I know how my refrigerator works and I sure as fuck know how my electric range and toaster work and if any of them died I could diagnose the problem fairly accurately

I'm starting to have a pretty good grasp on how the toilet works but that damn chain and float just doesn't make any SENSE to me

you stupid fuck

You're obviously a noob or you'd already know this: comparing computers to cars DOES NOT WORK.  EVER.

You're also obviously not a programmer or you'd know this too:  when you write a program, you keep the actual program and it's GUI separate.  The GUI should only be a frontend.  There are a number of reasons for this, including stability, security, and modularity (such as being able to call a program from another in a predictable fashion).  All good programs are written this way, including the better Windows programs.

Unfortunately, many Windows programmers have never had any formal introduction to software architecture and end up with... well, shitty code.  This is furthered by the ridiculous fear of the command line.  Windows users tend to think it's difficult to use (getting support in this idea from the spectacular failure that is command.com and cmd.exe) and this results in professionals integrating their GUIs into their programs, making them prone to instability, security problems, and difficult to integrate.  It's a vicious cycle.

Looking at pure noob usability, yes, a CLI is more daunting than pretty icons and pictures, but if you've been using computers all your life and are competent enough to install (noob) GNU/Linux, there is no reason to be afraid of it, for all it's benefits.  If you're so stubborn that you can't be bothered to take full advantage of your computer, go the fuck back to Windows.  Linux isn't ready for you yet, and I personally hope it never will be.

Oh, and FYI, VLC is also just a GUI frontend.  The only difference is that it defaults to (on Linux) wxWidgets instead of the console.  If you want a GUI for MPlayer, there are at least three that I know of available, the most common of which being GMPlayer.

if you're using kubuntu, your file manager is konqueror, no?

i seem to remember that konqueror has an "edit as root" function.  once you do that your permissions problems should be solved.  OR:

for *buntu, add "sudo" to the beginning of the commands that you need to be root for.

In any case, VLC just WORKS which is what I'm looking for.  It may suprise you but Kubuntu is very much ready for me it seems - everything works and is fairly easy to figure out.  I suppose I could let programmer elitists like you and others on this board chase me back to windows but it seems like I don't have to.

Whether it's a "frontend" or whatever, if I can work it through a GUI and it doesn't crash it's a success in my book.  So go ahead and separate the GUI and the program but remember your end users or you won't be able to sell it.  I don't think I should have to learn a new language to speak to my computer and I think most normal people would agree with me.

Thanks, that may come in handy at some point.  Seems like everything is working fine for now though.

Obviously you do, you aren't born with knowledge of GUIs.  Many if not all are harder to use than their mathematically logical CLI counterparts.

"I don't think I should have to learn a new language to speak to my computer and I think most normal people would agree with me." - Check your regional setting if text is appearing in another language. Any linux/unix CLI I have ran into was made of English, regualar expressions, and syntax listed in manpages.

Don't change these.
