repair install stalling

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-22 12:10

Okay so I need some serious help here. I recently upgraded my cpu to a dual core one and only one core was detected so I did a repair install. The problem is, the repair install process stalls at about 2/3. I tried doing the repair install with the hard disk in another comp, same result. Now is there a way to fix this? Or does anyone know if I can use a linux live-cd to manually perform a repair install of windows?

Install Linux.

That is not an option either since what I want right now is to get the repair install to complete so that I can use windows again plus I have all my data on that hard disk which I do not want to lose.

If you don't want to lose any data, then install Linux and you won't!

I'd prefer keeping my windows installation for now

Okay OP here. The repair install didn't work so I did a clean install. My files are all still there, so I just had to copy My Documents folder and all to get back my settings and start menu and all. Now I want to copy the registry back. The registry files are stored in %SystemRoot%\System32\Config\
Sam - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SAM
Security - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SECURITY
Software - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE
System - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM
Default - HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT
Userdiff

So my question is, which do I copy? I tried copying all of them and it fucked and I had to start all over.
