Looking for a new browser

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-19 7:18

Hi /comp/
I've been using Avant browser for a long time now, which is basically a shell for IE, and my friends tell me I shouldn't use IE for some reason, despite not having a single problem with it -_-
Anyway, which browser would you recommend, if I mainly browse forums and 4chan and check emails? I've tossed it up between Firefox and Opera, which one do you guys use and what are the pros and cons of each?
Thanks :)

I use Firefox
Which to install? Both.

Your friends are stupid. Use IE7

Try ie7, firefox, and opera.

Internet Explorer is bad for my friends the Internets. It doesn't conform to W3C standards, it causes all sorts of problems for web content developers, and it generally sucks.

It sucks because a lot of stupid people use it and those people won't change browsers even though IE is a pox on the Internets and causes headaches for every web developer of every webpage, no matter how small.

It doesn't matter if you change browsers or not. Regardless of how stupid you are/aren't, your act of leaving the pool doesn't help those still inside it realize that it's full of AIDS, so you might as well stay in and get a big hot meat injection of HIV while you're at it.

Use Firefox or Opera. They're very similar, with a few differences:

1. Firefox has extensions, which can add features.
2. Firefox is a bit heavier than Opera.
3. However, Firefox is compatible with more sites than Opera.

1. Opera is closed source, meaning you have ads in your browser unless you pay them $40.
2. Opera has a nice skin, but Firefox has thousands.
3. Opera has a really, really shitty text editor.

Opera has no ads since 2 years ago.
sucks anyway.

Opera does have one main advantage ("main" as in "I fkin WANT that!"):

It logs the position and history of all windows separately (until u close them yourself), so if the browser crashes ("Whaddayamean 'if'?!?") then the next time you start, u can go on from there...

...rather than take forever trying to find some of them in the history log (since those sites are sorted alphabetically, or at best by time opened...), like some other browsers...

Lemme see Firefox do that, and I can stop using Opera.

Firefox has an extension for that

true, firefox doesn't have that functionality per se, but there are extensions for this very problem.
tabmixplus for example lets you customize tabs and has a session manager integrated (you can continue your session even if there's no crash).

Up-to-date stable versions of Firefox include that. (You might have to set a preference, or not, as I have those settings commented out in my user.js?)

Seriously, you can't compare Opera to obviously outdated versions of Firefox like 1.5 or 2.0.

Firefox has memory problems.

Not anymore, it was fixed during the summer.

Stop using deprecated and unstable releases. 3.0 is the only way to go (but it'll stagnate soon, and I don't know if 4.0 is next).

http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/ says the latest version is 1.5...? It even says "Get a sneak peek at Firefox 2!"

I use IE only for Windows Update.

The latest stable versions are kept here: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/

Download and install a new version every morning, as you don't want to be using a deprecated version.  (I don't know if autoupdate works anymore, but I don't use it anyway.)

The reason they keep the latest stable version hidden away?  It's because they want to sell support to stupid newbies.

I almost forgot, you'll want to use a real theme as well.  The official one sucks because it is made for stupid windows newbies.

Nightly builds aren't meant to be stable.
Mostly they are, but they don't need to.

Too bad the extensions DON'T WORK!

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-20 16:24

>>17
how's the compatibility of extensions with those new builds?

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-20 16:35

>>21
100% (unless the extension is written for FF 0.9 lol).

>>19
Release builds are meant to be stable.
Sometimes they are, but most of the time not.
