KDE/X keyboard mapping

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-16 11:04

Hi, I don't like the default keyboard mapping in my Lunix, so I'd like to change it. I don't know if it's particular to KDE (desktop and window manager I'm using), or the whole X, and I'd also gladly customize my character mode terminals. How do I modified it/them? (Not asking for a tutorial, just the file name so I can man or Google it, because I don't know where to start.)

P.S.: Just to speed things up: I already tried www.opera.com, and I'm already using Lunix (I know it's Linux). There's no \WINNT\System32 directory to delete, no Internet Explorer to stop using, and no C: to format (even though it wouldn't erase my data). And no, I don't think I'm worthy of a Mac, I'm asking for man pages and wanting to do things for myself.

Depends what EXACTLY you're talking about and which distro you're using. Have you tried (in KDE):

Control Center > Regional & Accessibility > Keyboard Layout

?

There are certainly files to edit manually, but this is way faster and easier.

Oh, and if you're weeaboo and want to be able to type in Japanese, you'll need to install a kanji dictionary and will probably want to look into SCIM.

That allows me to choose one keyboard layout or another for different languages, but I want to make my own. I'm asking about the files I need to modify (or rather, copypasta) to start working on my own layout; from there I can do the rest myself.

Not rly, I want some useful characters which I added to my Windows keyboard layout, such as ●←↓↑→░▒▓█★¯—±∞≠≡∆... Plus I can do all the single and double line drawing (including single to double junctions) with dead keys and the numeric keypad.

Depends on distro.  I'm sure there's an app to make it easy, but I guess the files you want (in Gentoo) are:

/etc/rc.conf
/etc/conf.d/keymaps
/usr/share/keymaps/*

I dunno, I've never had to do something like that before.

Oh, you know what, you probably won't need to mess with /etc/rc.conf, but whatever.

Don't change these.
