pros and cons of each major browser-

internet explorer:
- pros: default browser on windows.
- cons: poor css support, security crap, almost 6 years old.

firefox:
- pros: extensions/themes, open source, decent rendering.
- cons: memory usage, umm.

safari:
- pros: amazingly fast, looks cool, passes acid2.
- cons: proprietary, not that customizable for the average user.

opera:
- pros: passes acid2 test.
- cons: slower than safari, bloated, has ads in the browser, costs money, proprietary, shoves a lot of useless features in your face [blog and my opera? no thanks], copied apple with the widgets.

konqueror:
-pros: fast as hell, well integrated with kde (kioslaves, etc), passes acid2, real adblocking support, better security record than firefox, very low memory consumption (because it uses the kdelibs which are already loaded for kde, similar to how ie does it) and can be configured to use even less.
-cons: none that I care about.

Also Opera has been free of charge and ad free since September 2005 (v8.50).

Opera:
- pros: there's an ebuild for opera
- cons: it just get dropped to /opt, it's statically linked, and it's CLOSED SOURCE, which means that it is a BINARY package.

IE has the advantage of being fast and low footprint (it's about the same if not better than Opera in this aspect.) Also moar compatibility with plugins and badly coded sites (which still outweigh the amount of Linux faggots who put up blocks for IE in their .htaccess files.) IE also has the disadvantage of nagging you to shit about safety every time you do anything ever.

Opera has the advantage of being fast (it's still generally faster than Safari though Safari edges ahead with javascript performance and some other things) with the best caching and partial-rendering capabiity so it generally should get the title for speed and responsiveness. Opera should also get praise for being vastly more customisable in terms of interface, not being run by a shitty egocentric dishonest user-hostile organisation like Mozilla, and a vast array of extra features built in. And a whole heap of things I totally forget because I just take for granted the idea I can customise every shortcut or use mouse gestures or do proper text zoom and all sorts of things Opera has done for like 5 years.

Firefox's Mouse Gestures extension is far better than the shitty built-in mouse gestures in Opera. It also does proper text and image zoom.

IE only has a "low footprint" because there's a high footprint OS that it parasites off of for libraries, etc.  If Firefox moved it's shared libraries and rendering core in the kernel or dll's (where it shouldn't be because of security issues) it'd be blazing fast to load too.  Also would cause your computer to be hacked like crazy.

Enjoy your ram usage and hacking config files each time you upgrade Firefox and it cries about incompatible extensions. Opera's mouse gestures work great from the second you install it and tend to more accurately recognise your gesture from what I can figure out. It also takes advantage of Opera's fairly complex commands system where you can tie sequential commands together and even use | symbols for alternate commands, which is something your "LOL MOVE TO LEFT MEANS GO BACK A PAGE" extensions can not.

As for proper text and image zoom, my Firefox 2 beta doesn't.. are you referring to an extensions that lets you do this or are you saying the "proper way" is the standard IE6\Firefox 1\Safari one?

Opera is for people who want a powerful browser and no bullshit. Go make a crop circle and sell dorky t-shirts about it.

MSIE:
- Pros: none

Firefox:
- Pros: great rendering, great JavaScript, great CSS, lots of features, fairly secure, open sauce
- Cons: a bit bloated, people doesn't know how to make it use less RAM

Opera:
- Pros: great rendering, awesome CSS, fairly secure, lots of features, small
- Cons: it just get dropped to /opt, it's statically linked, and it's CLOSED SOURCE, which means that it is a BINARY PACKAGE

Konqueror:
- Pros: good rendering, great CSS, fairly secure, open sauce
- Cons: less polished than Firefox or Opera sometimes

Safari:
Get a real computer.

I've been using Firefox since pre-1.0 and I've never had this happen. I have no idea what you're talking about. I do, however, recall the config file nightmares Opera gave me when I tried to add the firefox-style "wp <article>" address bar searches (though I hear this is fixed in 9.0, so I'll reserve judgement on that one.)

Mouse gesture diagonally down-right = zoom in. up-left = zoom out. Do it on a picture sizes it. Try not being so incompetent next time.

- Pros: I'll get back to you on that.
- Cons: ZOMG HEX.

Cat:
- Pros: Secure and fast.  Program takes up almost no memory and it produces output instantly.
- Cons: Same as Notepad but you can't scroll back (unless you use " | less" extension)

Ethereal:
- Pros: See absolutely all the secret hidden packets the server is sending. 
- Cons: YOU GONNA GET HEXED TENDERLY.
