Help, computer no longer boots widnows..

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-06 1:23

Today I got an unspecified system error randomly while watching vids on youtube, it came up a good 3 or 4 times then popped up with a blue screen telling me windows had shut down to prevent hardware damage or whatever, now I cannot get windows to boot at all, and I keep getting random errors including "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" I thought it was just windows fucking around so I tried to re-install it with no luck, this is the only error I have written down:
STOP: 0x0000007E (0xFFFFFFFFC0000005, 0xFFFFF8000117F83B, 0xFFFFFFADFF260F6E0, 0xFFFFFADFF260F0F0)
It recommends I "Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing." and also tells me to try a different video adapter. (which I currently can't find..
Any help would be appreciated, Thanks in Advance.

OP here, I got my computer to boot by disabling "external cache" in the bios, I am wondering, is this feature important?I don't really notice a difference so far, but I don't want to have any performance issues in the future...

I agree with you, >>6. Back a year ago a computer I had was dying in a similar way. I had random bluescreens and so on, weird errors, and odd stuff happening. During these days of it dying, there would be long spaces of time where it would work perfectly well, with no problems. Then it'd go crazy with problems, then be fine again for a while. Eventually it weirded out one day, and after I turned the power off and on again it would not do anything at all.

You should get a new computer now.

"IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL", especially during video playback sounds like video card.

I would try the following:
1) Update graphics drivers
2) Swap out video card

"IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL"
Is the most vague error message a windows user can ever get.

In a nutshell its basicly a kernel mode process or driver trying to access a location in memory that it doesnt have the permissions to access.
See a kernel mode process can only access other processes with an interupt request level (IRQL) lower than or equal to its own.

The error points to it being either a hardware, software or firmware incompatibility.

The usefull part of the message is the hex spew that always acompanies.

Whenever ive had a 7E error its ALWAYS been VGA related, either my cards have been fux0rd or the drivers typicaly shit.

Ive seen more than my fair share of IRQL errors in my time.
It totaly sucks when i get a hex string ive never encountered before cause troubleshooting them is a fucking nightmare.

I see that you are very experienced with Windows. Allow me to ask you for your opinions and thoughts and experiences with Linux.

OP here, well I got it working like I said, but I don't see why shit should be breaking already, I have only had this PC for 6 months, I am hoping it's the shitty videocard I have in here, but I don't have any other pci gfx cards in my house right now... I was thinking of seeing if my computer would boot a linux install with the external cache turned on, but not sure if there would be a point to that...

I got this playing NFS MW with an old ATi Radeon 9500Pro. I upgraded GPU to XF GeForce 6800 XT and problem was fixed. Get a new GPU.

Don't change these.
