XP vs 2000/2003

Name: Anonymous 2006-08-04 23:11

So I hear there's rumors on the internets about 2000/2003 Server being better than XP, but alas, Google is of little help. I recall some anon from /g/ saying something to the effect of "If you don't know why 2000 beats XP, you don't need to downgrade"; however, being the curious little bastard I am, I ask you, /comp/, which OS reigns supreme in the following categories: low memory usage (read: fewest useless services), security, and stability? A miscellaneous and/or compelling reasons is fine too.

low memory usage (read: fewest useless services), security, and stability
Those all depend much more on how much of an idiot the user is, than on the OS. Case in point: you can disable 'useless' services.

There's not really enough difference between 2k and XP to go from one to the other. just turn off the fisher-price crap in XP for better performance.

There's REALLY no gain to running 2k3 unless you're either a)running a server
b)wanting better Rights Management for the files on your computer

So, really; if you already have one, it's not worth the hassle to switch.

2000 is the better choice if you are wanting to upgrade from 98 though.

2000 is no longer given first-line support from Microshit, and is in to the abandonment cycle.  It's already caused me a few problems so I wouldn't recommend anyone switching to it anymore.
For instance, the windows compatibility toolkit now available has actually been rolled back to the one released almost 2 years ago, you just can't get the newer versions for Win2k any more, so they haven't just dropped support, they've actually downgraded the available downloads by the look of things.

The core of XP professional is essentially the same as 2k anyway, so I'd have to say that's the way to go at the moment.
