No POST

Name: Anonymous 2006-07-29 0:25

I've just built a new computer.  It doesn't POST.  It doesn't even get my monitor out of sleep mode.  What it does do is spin the hard drive, system fans and CPU fans.  The video card fan also spins.

I bought 2 sticks of RAM.  I tryed using each stick individually to no avail.  I tryed pulling out and re inserting everything.  I have everything but the escentials unplugged and still have the same problem.  I've plugged the monitor back into my old computer, it works fine.  I tryed unplugging and replugging the video card.

The computer is all new technology (compaired to my alod computer).  New processor socket, changed to PCI Express (from agp), 184 pin to 240 pin RAM, SATA hard drive.  The only thing new that I can play with in another machine is the DVD drive.  So testing individual componnents is impossible.

The stuff:

 AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Orleans 2000MHz HT 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 Processor
Gigabyte GA-M55SLI-S4 Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard
 eVGA 256-P2-N554-AX Geforce 7600GT KO 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card
 gigaram 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM Unbuffered DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel Kit System Memory

Any thoughts on what is wrong?  Should I RMA something?

so it doesn't even beep?

Name: Anonymous 2006-07-29 1:08

no beeps, no flashing messages, nothing but spinning fans and drives

read the mobo manual?

I did.  Fallowed the instructions on how to install everything.  I even read the manuals to the things I plugged into the motherboard.

There was no answer anywhere.  Now I'm asking you guys since your the only ones I think of common sence in the matter.

Make sure your case isn't grounding your motherboard. I've had similar problems that were fixed by adjusting a screw here or there.

I does not matter, they should work separatly too

Try resetting CMOS (move the jumper for it, while the PSU is unplugged from wall, for about 15 sec).
Also, make sure graphics card is seated properly. If you have a spare PCIE card, try it. If that doesn't work try booting with just the graphics card and nothing else, see if it posts.

Where are the cardboard washer supposed to go.  Between the screwheads and the motherboard or between the motherboard and the raiser?  Or could the grounding be happening at the face plate?

Its a dual channel motherboard.

I thought the same things, but they didn't work.

Take out RAM, unplug the hard disks, take out the video card, take everything off and just have a motherboard and a power supply. even disconnect the front USB.

plug the power supply into the motherboard

turn it on

does it beep?

Still no beep.

Its the processor isn't it?

yes very poible but y do u ask did u bend a pin?

Name: Anonymous 2006-07-29 22:26

I just pulled the processor and all the pins look good.

Here is a summery of all the things I've tried.
1) Pulling all but the RAM, MB, proc, and video card.
2) Pulling everything but the MB and proc.
3) Unplugging, checking pins and replugging everything (PSU cords, RAM, CPU, Video Card, system fans, etc)
4) Taking EVERYTHING out of the case, setting it up on an antistatic bag, and plugging everthing needed back in (Video card, CPU, PSU, RAM).

The results are all the same.
No beeps. No change in the screen in anyway. The fans turn on.  The HD turns on (when plugged in). The DVD player turns on (when plugged in).

I don't have another thermal pad so plugging in the CPU is out of the question until I get some Acrilic Silver or something.

After talking with someone that works for Intel, he suggested that it was the motherboard.  Someone else recommended I pull the CPU and listen for the beep.  I didn't get the beep so its most definatly the motherboard.

Thanks to those that helped me figure this out. /comp rocks!!!
