MS-DOS = borken?

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-10 6:44

Sorry if this isn't the proper forum for this.

But for as long as I can remember, whenever I try to run a program in MS-DOS (usually some old 90s game, like doom, for instance) I get the error:

"(location of file)
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows Applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application."

How do I go about fixing this? I honestly don't know what to do, since I don't think I can uninstall ms-dos, or install a newer version, or what.

1) Make ms-dos boot disk?
2) www.opera.com

1) Create a new file in c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt, and put the following into it:

@echo off
lh %SystemRoot%\system32\mscdexnt.exe
lh %SystemRoot%\system32\redir
lh %SystemRoot%\system32\dosx
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 P330 T3

2) Alternatively, use DOSBOX: http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/ You really should use this to run old games anyway.

what os are you using?  older windows versions are running on top of dos, newer ones aren't

USE WINDOWS 98 OR LOWER

He is using XP (or 2k) otherwise autoexec wouldn't be named .nt
NT 4 used the name .old also nt did not get as far as telling you that stuff when trying to run doom.

>>1 if you want some speed out of your dos games, i suggest you install Windows98 SE on your computer on a different partition using FAT32.
all os'es higher than windows ME are more or less dos incompable.

Don't change these.
