Video encoders/ formats

I have an unnecessarily large avi file that I wish to make smaller.  I assume by the size that is uncompressed, but I don't know what format to encode it in, nor what program I would use.  I was thinking xvid or DivX, but I'm open to suggestions, as long as it isn't an AIDS-filled format like wmv or realplayer.

VirtualDub and/or derivatives.

Using direct stream copy you can cut it into multiple pieces. Reencoding is probably a bad idea, especially if you don't know wtf you're doing.

uncompressed avis are roughly a gig a minute and hog CPU. May just be high bitrate

I'm sure.  I just looked in properties.  It says "compression: uncompressed"

Using virtual dub mod i reencoded with xvid and on the second try got a 255 mb video file that plays and has reasonable quality.  I will check it again tomorrow when I am fully sentient, but I think  I have succeeded.

Don't change these.
