Wireless-G Router with weak signal

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-26 20:58

Hey. I just picked up a D-Link Wireless-G router and stuck it downstairs. I'm just up the stairs and around one corner, and it tells me I'm getting 18-24Mbps with "Low" connection strength.  And that's with the usb adaptor situated as close to the door as possible.  What's the deal? My old linksys had a much stronger signal until it fried. It was 802.11b, but that shouldn't make a difference at a distance of maybe 15m.

Get rid of it, and buy a Netgear Rangemax 240

Boo!

Every Netgear router I've ever bought has been a total POS. Every DLink router has been a total win.

why the fuck would anyone buy anything but a WRT54G or GS

fail for using inferior networking equipment

VROOM VROOM COMPILE FIRMWARE DESU SUPER FAST I RUN FROM POLICE EVEN THOUGH IT IS A FACT MY ROUTER WILL NOT GET ANY FASTER OR ANY EXTRA FEATURES FROM JUST STICKING NEW FIRMWARE INTO IT

ENJOY YOUR BINARY PACKAGES

You really are an idiot, aren't you? The whole reason people modify or write new firmwares (for lots of things, not just routers) is to add extra features or improve performance. Want VPN client/server features? Want to use the router as a repeater? Want QoS and load balancing? Well those are just a few things third-party firmwares make DLink routers do that they ordinarily can't. Try doing some research before you spew any more "ZOMG U MUST BE A L33T LOONIX FAGGOT TO USE ANYTHING WITHOUT A MICROSOFT LOGO ON IT!" drivel, please.

And you forgot the main reason: you can compile them with -Wall -s -O3 -funroll-loops -malign-double -ftemplate-depth-30 -ffast-math -march=<hw> -mtune=<hw> -fstrict-aliasing -fomit-frame-pointer -malign-jumps=4 -malign-functions=4 -malign-loops=4 -fschedule-insns2 -mwide-multiply -fprefetch-loop -arrays

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-27 18:59

Wait, you do realize that -march implies -mtune, right?

Opera sucks sure there's an ebuild for opera but it just get dropped to /opt, it's statically linked, and it's CLOSED SOURCE, which means that it is a BINARY package.

kilowatt power amplifier ftw. screw the law.
more seriously, try a directional or otherwise better antenna. Or try moving the router or adapter. In particular, the direct line should not go through a radiator if avoidable - that more than anything else kills the signal.

Don't change these.
