Name: Anonymous 2006-04-23 18:50

Yes, I use Gentoo. So? I dont see any problem. I embraced my Gentoo distro long ago and I am happy together with my workstation (that is a stage 1 box!). I have a fucking lot of ebuilds in and outside of portage and my CFLAGS are pretty optimized and solid.

But thanks anyway asshole. Go and use your stupid Debian while I EMERGE new ebuilds.

For me Gentoo is perfect. For you, perhaps not. What is really strage about Gentoo is this: people who like it or dislike it keep constantly refering to Gentoo-when in reality we are refering to Linux. With othert distro's when you have problems they are problems with Redhat or with SuSE or with Lindows. But if you have problems with Gentoo you have problems with Linux. That's because with Gentoo you have returned to the source.

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-24 16:00

Hey >>19, listen to me for a moment, a'ight? I don't care if it's not related to this thread. Just listen!

Yesterday, I went over to the Ristorante di Milano for a simple meal. Yes, THAT Italian restaurant, Ristorante di Milano.
But the whole restaurant was so crowded, I couldn't even find a seat for hours!
Then I saw a poster that said "Special offer! €12 discount".
I thought to myself... geez, that's so fucking amazing. You guys don't even normally visit Ristorante di Milano.
All you bastards came here just for that stupid-assed €12 discount.
Just for those 12 Euros. TWELVE FREAKIN' EUROS!!

Then I saw some parents & children. A family of four eating out at the Ristorante di Milano. Damn, so much for that bitch's home-cooked family feast.
Then one of the little brats said "Daddy's gonna order a large Bruschetta Fegatini".
I couldn't believe it! Uuuuuggh, are you out of your fucking mind!?
Shiiit, i'll pay you €12 just to move your stanky fat-ass out of a seat.
Dude, you just don't go to the Ristorante di Milano for that lala-oh-i'm-so-happy dinner bullshit.
It's where you pick a fist-fight with the fucking guy sitting across 'yah in that U-shaped table.
Kill or be killed. Heh... now that's the kinda shit I like.
Ladies, kids, stand back... 'cuz everything's gonna get FUCKED UP NOW.

After waiting for ages, I finally found an empty seat. But then, the guy next to me ordered by saying "A large Neopolitan pizza with a LOTTA' pepperoni".
Dude, that just pissed me off even more. Shit, you just don't say "lotta' pepperoni" nowadays, ya' freaking bastard.
How the fuck can you say "lotta' pepperoni" with that "oh, i'm so fucking cool, hur-hur-hur..." look!?!?
Damn, I was THIS CLOSE to standing in front of his face and yelling "DO YOU EVEN LIKE EATING THAT MUCH FUCKIN' PEPPERONI!?"
For a freaking hour, I was THIS CLOSE to doing that.
Shit, I bet you just wanted to use the words "lotta' pepperoni" out loud. Wow, you're so clever.

Dude, you gotta be like ME. See, now I know what's "all that" in the Ristorante di Milano.
What's cool right now to say is "Pennette con Ricotta & Melanzane". That's it!
You see now, a large pasta serving with aubergines & ricotta is what the hardcore Ristorante di Milano freaks eat. Like ME.
Saying "Pennette con Ricotta & Melanzane" means that won't get a pizza, but they put a WHOLE MESS of pasta.
Mmmmm... a lotta pasta, now THAT'S what I call a meal.
But anywhoo... ordering that is kinda' like a double-edged sword. Cuz' then the waiters might notice you the next time you come by.
So yeah, I can't reccomend this to noobs.
For you, just go order a Prosciutto e Melone al Ventaglo. That's as far as you can go, you know what i'm sayin'?

Arch and Ubuntu are made of pure win.  Gentoo although a good distro, is just gonna lose more and more as time goes on.  That's why they added teh graphical installer, because they realize they need to change some things to be able to keep up.

I'm using Gentoo for a few months now, coming from the Debian world.
Portage is fine, but not as advanced as apt-get, desinstallation for example. And portage is quite slow too. If i'd had some time, i'd rewrite it in C for my personnal use.
But gentoo wipes out Debian for documentation and communty, Debian's one is full of elitists and morons.

No OS is actually freer than any Unix ever was:
1. You decide what to do and how exactly should it work
2. You can get it to do anything you want
3. There are no licenses

Name: Anonymous 2006-05-16 15:37

>>75
Liberated. As in being set free.

Free from things such as being able to produce a program for work which conforms to proprietary standards without having to reproduce a bunch of code which has already been written under a restrictive license (I'm looking at you, GPL).

Free from being able to mix and match code and give it to a friend without having to ferret out every bit of code that is not only used in the programs I'm giving him, but is also hidden in some obscure GPL'ed program somewhere.

Free from being able to do ANY thing that I want with the code.

That, my friends; is American-style freedom

Give me BSD ANY day!

In the real world, you have these things called 'trade secrets', it's a part of 'competition', which is a sign of a healthy 'free market'. This results in having to either maintain your competitive edge by holding specifications secret, or starving in the street.

Of course, you'd have to live in a genuinely free (as opposed to a jee-ehn-yoo-inly Free) society to appreciate the value of capitalism; but trust me, there's a time and a place for cooperation, and the corporate world ain't it!

2. your point makes no sense

3. this point makes even LESS sense then #2 did.

lastly, the BSD license is far more free than the GPL. You might want to read up on it.

Name: Anonymous 2006-05-16 17:47

Name: Anonymous 2006-05-16 20:42

Look, you can't have freedom unless you are willing to grant other people freedom. BSD-style licences do not grant other people freedom since they can't ensure they will themselves be able to grant the same freedoms. Only the GPL can enforce the necessary freedom.

Name: Anonymous 2006-05-16 23:04

Name: Anonymous 2006-05-17 6:21

How does BSD allow you to take the freedom away of others? If what you want is a commie license that forces others to be commies too, then it's not exactly freedom - it's forcefully open source free of charge non-free software.

Regarding the long haired, LSD taking hippie: I already said what I wanted to - he may have all the time in the world to waste compiling shit and going VROOM VROOOM, but I'd rather download executable files from trusted sources which depend on standard libraries (which, if necessary, I can download in executable form too). This way I can download, test, and dump or adopt in 2 minutes instead of 20, having to fix all the shit that won't compile and waiting for a 1 MB shell script to run for 5 minutes doing shit. Lol freedom!!!! I like open sauce, but I don't like to deal with the sauce if I'm not cooking pizza at the moment.

Name: Anonymous 2006-05-17 6:29

>>87
Finally, regarding freedom: who said you need others to have freedom to have yours? This is completely illogical. On top of that, how does this relate to BSD or GPL? It's not like BSD doesn't allow others to be free. In fact, it allows others to be freer than GPL does - because they can do more things.

RMS is just a whiny hippy who wants to see everybody's sauce just because, and wants to force his (rather twisted) view of freedom on everybody else, which shows it's not true freedom as it's made of forced and viral.

Just quit whining. If you want to make something free, then it's fucking free. Public domain is the true freedom: absolutely no restrictions. BSD is a honourable public domain (PD with credits). Viral licenses can't possibly be freer than this because they force something onto you - for whatever the reason, but they force shit, therefore they're not free.
