Name: Anonymous 2006-03-29 12:48

Im getting a new comp soon and its OS is XP. I've only heard bad things about XP so is it really as bad as people say? Whats actually wrong with it anyway?

Also, whats the best OS out at the moment?

::waits for hundreds of conflicting opinions::

XP isn't bad, if you've used other Windows versions for a while. It's very user friendly. It's a vast improvement over ME, this coming from someone who had to use the latter for a few years. Hell, ME crashed on me every day. I think XP maybe has done it once? Maybe?

I've heard alot about the various Linux distros but don't know much about them personally.

It depends on what you want to do. If you want a Win32 workstation, I recommend Windows 2000.

Here's what I like of XP:
- 64 bit version
- Better wireless support
- User switching
- Prefetching
- Fast boot

Here's what I don't like of XP:
- It's bloated; you have to spend a lot of time cutting down the crap that comes with it and turning off two dozen services until it gets close to Windows 2000's performance.
- Windows Mierda Player 9 with digital rights infringement. I suppose I can break it but it still sucks to have that piece of shit.
- Those fucking system tray bubbles. (I see those fucking bubbles one more time.)
- Useful administration options are hidden further away and nice interfaces for stupid users are in their place.
- Explorer.exe is even more bloated, so it's even less usable. I don't use it, but if I have to, it'll suck more.

The main reason why I prefer Windows 2000 for now is performance, but I know I'll end up moving to Windows XP Professional 64 Bit Edition or Windows Server 2003 64 Bit Edition in 1-3 years.

Windows ME is not an operating system, it's a joke

Linux is great for a server, but IMO and not trying to start a fucking flame war it's much worse for a workstation or desktop computer for a large number of reasons including graphics performance, graphics desktop, hardware support, available software, stupid obsession with compiling from sauce and spending 15-30 minutes to install some shit you just want to have a look at, the retarded FHS ugly mess, other anal "features" like case-sensitivity every-fucking-where (all the annoying things are religiously made over and over because it's an heresy to do things the other way), and this one is very personal - lack of a better orthodox file manager than Midnight Commander. Other than that, it's fine. I use it almost as much as Windows at work and stuff, and I think I know how to hack my way at it, just don't like it so much than Windows after I've installed all the open sauce (GNU utilities, MINGW, Perl, PHP, Python, Apache, etc.) on it.

Don't change these.
