When is the last time you've heard of someone getting sued/extorted for downloading games? Not movies or music, but games?

Name: Anonymous 2006-02-01 7:10

Never. Doesn't happen. Only the distributors and webmasters are getting fucked, not leeches.

I've downloaded probably 20k worth of stuff, and the single only time I was 'caught' was when I got pcAnywhere from eMule. Symantec watches certain hashes and if you connect they'll contact your ISP. Game companies unlike the MPAA/big business do not have the time or resources to waste on such a thing, they can barely make releases as is.

The only times you should worry are for music/movies, game piracy is not pursued. This is because game companies focus on the real solution, that is system locking and street business. The PC market is too hobbyist in comparison to pay attention to.

So? How did your ISP contact you? Did you get in any trouble? What did you have to do or pay?

Warning shot. ISP did not do shit. In fact, I didn't even get a letter, all I got was an email, to an account I had not checked in years. They requested I delete it and that I stop stealing from Symantec. That's it.

Bringing cases to court is out of the question, instead they'll use scare tactics. Though the software was shit anyway and I deleted it after installing. In conclusion: as long as the ISP cannot be held responsible, neither will the user. It all comes down to money. Poor companies can't pursue, and big companies don't want to lose money pursuing on a wide scale, so they don't pursue at all or instead set up propaganda cases. Symantec is unusual. They have a shitload of unused resources, and a shitload of bad software that no one buys. General rule of thumb is to stick to the masses and keep away from the big guys.

Game companies aren't big guys.

Well, that makes me a feel bit better -- I usually never download anything, but got the stupid insane idea to download something. Hopefully EA doesn't wake up any time soon :P

Oh, and what about the game industry being bigger than the movie industry (or something?)

The game industry is bigger than the movie industry, but it's fractured, so it's not bigger as a whole, and therefore not a threat legally. Though EA is possibly the worst company you could have chosen to steal from, it's still a much better choice than stealing from a conglomerate with unlimited resources.

EA will probably someday be as large if not larger than the MPAA, and then you'll have to show a little caution. For now: pirate unconditionally, EA doesn't care. This is the golden era - who knows how long it will last.

Sims, Battlefield, C&C, TimeSplitters, LOTR, Freedom Fighters, B&W, Undying.

You can disagree on some, but they do have certain decent licenses. The Sims remains unchallenged as the most popular girl's  series.

EA didn't make them. Someone else made them, and EA either bought them up or did the sales pitch.

EA itself doesn't do anything except milk what they've already acquired to death. There's a reason why they're seen as the dregs of the gaming world.

Optonline/Cablevision NY metro. They're known for being lax on everything but upstream. Second to only Verizon in home speed nation-wide, I believe.
