Hi guys, I'm buying a new monitor. At the moment, I'm stuck with a fucked up (I suspect that my old Geforce4 took out my last monitor and made this one vibrate as fuck down in the right corner before I changed to a Radeon9800 Pro) 15" Crt from 94. Looking for a nice flat screen around 17", got any suggestions?

NEC-mitsubishi CRT
get LCD only if you have limited space.

Get a 19" CRT that does 96kHz, like the Samsung 997 or Viewsonic G90. You can get one for $200 US now, since the market is moving en masse to LCDs. Once you've seen 1600x1200 you'll never go back. Letter-quality FTW.

Forgot to mention that for video playback and emulators that support hardware stretch, you can switch to 2048x1536 60Hz and it's fucking gorgeous (do NOT run at 60Hz all the time; you WILL fuck up your eyes and I think it's hard on the monitor as well)

Yes running your monitor at 60Hz is the best way to give yourself chronic headaches and eye-rape, anything 85Hz and up is much better so keep that in mind when picking out a good CRT. Some can't operate above 60Hz at higher resolutions.

What freaking pussies lol
you all sound like you live in plastic bubbles and need SPECIAL care 24/7.
60hz wont give you headaches evaa, you're just freaking gay
neither will it do anything to yer monitor, in fact I guess it lasts longer cause the electron tube thingy has to do fewer work
my monitor runs at 72hz and I fucking watch anime all day and play any new game I want and I don't whine

I guess you've never spent an entire day coding in front of one of those. It won't give a headache, but after a few hours your eyes start killing you. I can actually see a 60Hz monitor refresh.
Of course, LCD also often runs at 60Hz, but it's wonderful for the eyes anyway.

I used to have a horrible 60Hz CRT and I was fine, but now I mostly use a laptop with a 60Hz screen and I do occasionally get headaches. Let's just say that it's different for everyone, but if you want to be sure just use a high refresh rate.

Laptops don't have flicker effects, only blur from high update times. DVI does have a transmission rate (max 85Hz?), but it doesn't work the same way.

thanks for all the great advices, I'll check into it

Hi, Here are some other things that I would consider when getting a new monitor.
1) A good CRT monitor is less expensive and has better picture
quality at the same time than an LCD.
2) Dot pitch: .25 mm or less (the lesser the better, this
determines how sharp your image is)
3) Make sure that what you look at in terms of size is the
VIEWABLE SIZE, because usually the frame really bulky
widdling down the actual monitor's size itself.
4) Make sure you know what type of CRT you are buying there are
mainy 2 kinds: Shadow Mask and Aperture Grille, on average
the grille is sharper and brighter but because of its design
it requires 1 or typically 2 hairline stabillizers to secure
the mesh lining behind the screen. This casts 2 hairline
shadows on the screen, you won't ever notice these unless you
look for them. The shadow mask gives usually less good
quality picture, but without the hairlines going horizontally
across the screen. Go to a place that sells monitors and look
hard to try and find the lines. Again only if you run a
white background will the show up if even then.
It isn't noticable at any other time (gaming, movies, and
such)
5) Power ratings. If your power bill is a problem you might look
into these things such as ENERGY STAR '05 and TCO '03
6) Maxium resolution and its operating refresh rate
If you graphics card can use 1600 x 1200 and you want to use
that, make sure your monitor can support it, and support it
at a good refresh rate. I've seen values between more is
always better I guess... (I'm running my CRT at 800x600
@ 100Hz)
8) Controls: a good set of screen controls will help you to
be able to perfect your screen to your liking.
7) Brands: I recommend brands like KDS and viewsonic.
Can anyone else had anything I've missed...recommend some sites...or models for him(her)?
This thread in general wins. When I got my own computer a year ago, I was adamant about getting an LCD monitor, because nearly every CRT monitor I'd used gave me chronic headaches. I didn't even know the refresh rate was alterable. =/
Additional note to those with sensitive hearing-- CRTs also whine, at varying (high) pitches and intensities. I'm guessing it's related to the refresh rate. That was the other reason I was so bent on getting an LCD..
