You can go the redundant route and take out the black power cord from the computer case.  This will essentially stop him from accessing the comp.  Is his OS windows?  I will assume that and say he should get the passworded logon screen....and I know he is using that and it is ineffective...but here is the thing...USE A PASS THAT IS NOT OBVIOUS.  I bet you the roomate has used a keylogger to find out all the pass info on your friend's comp, so I would suggest looking in the registry (advanced users only) and finding what the file is called.  Note:  This is an extremely hard, and final option to take.  Also I suggest Zonealarm in order to block against the viruses and the like.  Finally, kick the roomate's ass.

What OS, Windows? The screensaver should provide one by dropping you to the login screeen.
But the actual solution is for your friend to tell his roommate that he is not allowed to use his computer.

Please get a clue about things.

Man, I can't believe you don't know how to do this. Run AVG, Ad-aware and Spybot to get rid of any shit you might have (but in any case, keyloggers will be useless after the next steps). Delete and disable user accounts other than Administrator and optionally the user one you use. Set for them a good password. Good passwords are made of strange, non-dictionary words followed and/or preceded by random numbers, and are never written or told to anyone. Done. Oh, and if you leave the computer on, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete, and block it. A BIOS password will help prevent he uses a boot disk too.

BIOS password will be the most "secure" solution here, yes.

It's the best you have on PCs. You can use a secure OS with long passphrases and EFS, and yet anybody with physical access to your PC can use a boot disk and use your computer for anything else.

What's with all these crazy ideas? Just make a user account and a password, and disable Guest accounts. Not that hard. Set a password to monitor shutoff/screensaver and it will automatically require login if the computer is inactive for more than x number of minutes.

You could probably bypass this by booting safemode or using a live CD to write to NTFS- but who the fuck would do that?

Isn't there a USB device that can lock computers and require a password?

Name: Anonymous 2005-12-18 21:41

he is running xp pro, he has the accounts turned off and his own 11 charachter password, but he still manages to get on it somehow. what my friend is looking for is something that will need a password to save and monitor stuff. kinda like what they do with comps at high schools.

it's pretty obvious now that you're either bullshitting us and making up a story to get the answer you want for the question you don't want to ask or have no idea what you're talking about.

fuck this, though.

Just set permissions.

Name: Anonymous 2005-12-18 23:50

Change cases that have a lock on the front door (so you cant open it to turn the pc on) and on the case's side (so you cant open it and reset the bios). Some cases also have a feature that set off an alarm when the side of the case/front of the case is forced open. Just make sure it's off when you're not using it. Then the only way for your roomate to use it is to tear the front door off. If he does that he's in some deep shit.

Set the bios to password protect on bootup. Set your OS to one user with a hard to guess password. (This means Upper AND lower case letters with numbers)

Put the computer into lockdown when you leave if you must keep it on.

Set your permissions correctly.

If all else fails you can pull the power cord so you cannot turn it on at all.

My brother used to snoop on my machine when I wasn't home, 'till I move to residence. The best way to secure your machine is

1) Disable all account except the ones you use and password-protect them with secure password.

2) Disable or properly set permissions on all network shares.

3) Buy a locking case. (I use an Antec AMG1000)

4) Get into the habit of hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del or WinKey+L whenever you get up from the PC.

5) No matter how desperate his situation, if he ever needs to use your PC, fuck him and don't give him access or tell the password. I tried to be nice to help out my brother once and told him the password on the phone so he could use the only working burner in the house and he went through my porn and shit and left me little 'notepad' notes in my folders. So be warned, NEVER HELP PEOPLE.
