help anonymous!
I wana get a nice big fat hard drive.. the 300gb ones floating around seem nice, but I dont know which brands are better. I know enough to avoid deathstars, but others? how about seagate and western digital?

Name: Anonymous 2005-12-11 17:04

Both are good. I think Seagate is good for the bucks, and definitely good quality. I don't know if Western Digital is better in its Caviar line.

Name: Anonymous 2005-12-11 17:53

go with seagate.  5 year warranty on that shit. Plus a mail in rebate most of the time.

Name: Anonymous 2005-12-11 20:45

It's a warranty, but is it a George Zimmer warranty?

Name: GEORGE_ZIMMER 2005-12-11 23:12

HI... I'M GEORGE ZIMMER - FOUNDER AND CEO OF THE MEN'S WEARHOUSE. I HAD GOOD EXPERIENCES WITH WESTERN DIGITAL AND HEARD GOOD THINGS ABOUT SEAGATE. SOMEDAY, I IMPALED 50 I.B.M. AND HITACHI HD ON MY MASSIVE MASCULINITY, BECAUSE THEY DESERVED IT. I GUARANTEE IT.

A Maxtor died on me once.  Same for Western Digital.  Now I have a veritable cournicopia of WD, Seagate and Maxtor drives, all in working order.

I think I like my Seagate the most.

Uh-oh, I'm running a 20GB Maxtor as well. :x
I knew I should have opted for the Seagate when I bought my secondary; it was bigger and would have been cheaper after rebates!

Also, I don't know about Seagates, but my Maxtor makes strange buzzing noises when I start a new write on it after long periods of not accessing it.

Maxtor are teh wankz0r. Diamondmax plus9 and Diamondmax 10 drives (at least SATA ones) heat up so much you can literally cook food on them!

Seagate offers 5-year warranties these days. Think about it. Your HD blows up four years into the warranty, i.e. 2009, and shucks, there's no exact replacement... boom, you just got a replacement 6-terabyte disk.

Anyway, for warez/pr0n/media storage you probably won't care about speed either if this is your "other" HD. Do mind your backups and temperatures tho.

I had two Fujitsus die on me (although an ancient 4 GB Fujitsu hard disk is still working today). I had good experiences with Seagate and I love my new Seagate SATA HD.

I have one of the Maxtor Diamondmax 300gb SATA ones, it's good.
Every WD drive I've had have fucked up after 4-6 months with that clicking shit, then dying.

>>12 Old drives are known to have been built a lot sturdier than today's hard disks.

I've heard a lot of bad stuff about Maxtor, so I'd avoid them if I could.

Yeah, but these two ones who died were old too

warrenties are good until the tech support workers find 5 GB of hentai or loli on your computer

Who cares as long as it's legal, they can't go and tell you "Oh my gawd, we'll void your warranty because we've found obscene, sinful contents on your disk, you're going to hell! Repent!". At least not in Europe.
