hay guys,

it is possible to use a wrt54g to connect to other access points? and then plug it into your pc so you can connect to those APs via it?

The?

Fuck?

Some clarification needed here. Do you mean you want to connect multiple access points together so you have a single network with a larger range?

Yes that's right, but I want to be able to plug a PC in with a wire to it not wireless.

i.e.   PC <--wire--> this AP <- - wireless - -> other AP <==> INTERNETS

i think the parent poster meant an Ethernet Bridge with the AP's. i.e

His network <-> AP <~~~~~~> other AP <-> someone else's network
or?

Aye that's it

With the stock FW on the WRT54G i don't believe it's possible. but with the FreeWRT or whatever the name was it should work. same goes for the FW hack that allows you to use the underlying Linux system for bridging. depends if you have the First revisions which were all Linux powered, or the later L models.

my 0.02 :)

oh yeah, I just bought a WRT54G. Version 5 is shit

If you're going to be using a WRT54G you have to NOT get v5. Check the packaging to make sure you have an older version than v5 because it is shit. It doesn't use Linux as an OS anymore, uses some proprietary shit. You can never EVER use it in client mode to connect to other wireless devices wirelessly.

Yeah, I made the mistake of buying a WRT54G, too.
I returned it and got a Netgear instead after many wasted hours of trying to get it to work. >.<

I got myself an WRT54GL, it's really good. I've got OpenWRT on it and am much enjoying myself scanning local wireless networks and then cracking them on my PC.

I have a WRT54G wireless router. You can connect it to other access points by openning firefox(opera/ie/etc) and typing 192.168.1.1 into the address bar, when prompted for the username/pass leave the user blanks and enter admin as the pass. you'll be in a section named Setup now, go into the subsection called 'Advanced Routing'
the rest is pretty self-explanatory.

What is a good wireless router? I've heard the WRT54G is good because there are hacked firmwares for it...but this thread make me think differently and the linksys router I have right now sucks ass.

just don't buy the v5. check the s/n on the box to see what version it is (google it). or buy a GL or a GS instead.

As long as the serial doesn't start with CDFB, it's all good.

Don't change these.
