lol took me a little bit to find it.
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\bookmarks.html

C:\Documents and Settings\(your user name)\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\(something).default\bookmarks.html
That's how individual users of the computer have their own sets of bookmarks (among other things) - they're stored in their Documents and Settings folders.

i did a normal Windows search for "bookmarks.html" and it only came up with the stock Mozilla entry. any ideas why the above file didn't show up?

You didn't check the "Search hidden files and folders" checkbox in the advanced options section of the search window. The folder C:\Documents and Settings\(your user name)\Application Data is normally hidden.

It's hidden because Microsoft don't want the average (ie. dumb) user fucking around in there - you can cause stuff to stop working if you're careless with the contents.
