Right, so i browse /b/ often with Firefox. Problem is, sometimes i open images in tabs, and forget to save them immediately.
I come back in an hour and try to save them, but Firefox is gay, and refuses to save from cache. It wants to redownload the image from the internet.
By this time, /b/ has already purged those images from the server.
Is there anyway to browse Firefox's cache, or tell Firefox to save images from cache if downloading from the server is impossible?
PS, I can't seem to do it from about:cache .. and the actual cache files don't have extensions, so i don't know which are images, which are html, swf, etc.

File > werk offline. make sure you do this before you go through the history, then it should pull the images from cache unless its been overwritten by more recent pages.

maybe you just do not know where firefox store its cache.
you can go to
<yourWinUserDrive>/application data/Mozilla/Firefox/<yourFfUser>/Cache
if I recon properly.
there will be some data with random filename, raname all of them to .Jpeg and preview them.

DOS is helpful here: C:\> rename *.* *.jpg
It's one of the things I miss about DOS - UNIX handles globs differently so can't do that without writing a script.

That's not DOS, that's the Windows NT console subsystem, for which you can download native ports of the GNU console utilities, including bash if you prefer it, Perl, PHP, Python, as well as unique utilities not found in Unices like FAR Manager.

Well since it recognises DOS commands (I've been using DOS since before Windows 3.1) you'll forgive me if I refer to it as DOS.

This is where firefox SUCKS compared to IE, IE just saves the files with the proper names and extentions. Who cares where the cache is if it's an unreadable jumblefuck mess.
That "security" isn't enough to keep someone who really wants to know what's in your cache from finding out. It only deters the normal user from seeing the cache.

You're not supposed to want to access the cache directly.
>>9
Indeed, although I admit people sometimes overdo it in the security department, when there are far more important problems elsewhere, and that extra "security" is nothing but a hassle. For example, like somebody in 4-ch said, "PUT THE CURRENT DIRECTORY BACK IN THE PATH ALREADY YOU GODDAMN HIPPIES! IT IS NOT BLOODY UNSAFE, YOU LOONS!".

Exactly, these are the cases where "security" is stupid.

It's not security so much as it is bugfix: a problem IE has (or perhaps had) is occasionally using the wrong image, page, or plug-in simply because the cache index became corrupted and different sites served very different data using the same file name. I did have one disturbing experience in IE where it displayed an image completely inappropriate for the site because of that a few years ago.
Firefox takes the legacy Mozilla approach of giving every file in its cache a unique near-random name rather than the original as-served name.
It can be argued that both approaches are stupid for different reasons.

This is why i like Opera. Opera caches shit using its own naming scheme, but retains extensions. That way if I do need to (And i don't, which i'll explain in a bit) I can just browse to the cache dir, and arrange icons by type, delete, arrange icons by size, delete. and then look through shit.
As for not needing to use the cache. I have Opera set up to not check images on loadup. That way i can keep the imagesopen in tabs. Close Opera, reopen, and do whatever. The images will stay there, always loaded from cache.
Very helpful while i browse 4chan, open shit in background tabs, and then save them to disk at my leisure. Even if it's weeks from when i opened them. As long as i don't clean the cache.

I find when I use Opera for 4chan I have to refresh pages before I see them updated. Don't suppose you know what I need to do to fix that? It's obviously using its cache to access a stale page but I don't know how to stop it. Which is a real shame because Opera is an excellent browser and I'd use it more if it didn't get in the way of my trolling.

I have it set to "Check Documents: Always" "Check Images: Never" "Check Other: Never" uncheck "Always Check Redirect" and make sure "Empty on Exit" is unchecked, too.
The only time it ever slips up, is when Opera crashes for whatever reason. Sometimes when it crashes, some cache is lost .. other times, the cache is fine. Just be careful about closing opening multiple Opera windows, or make sure to save sessions. THough i'm not sure how session saving will affect cache.
Try it and find out.

I haven't had a single opera crash for the past twelve months.
How the heck are you getting it to go down? Did you find some neato tidbit on the web?

I like the "recycle bin" feature of Opera. "o shit I closed that page... aha, here it is!"
I got a free registration code from their 10 year anniversary giveaway, so I've been using it more now that it's no longer adware. The gestures are neat once you learn them.

I'm usually opening up too much at once. Middle click everything i see, and if each page i open has popups or a bunch of swf or something .. usually it hangs, and then windows comes up with the "This program has performed"
But if i don't try to overwork Opera, i can keep it uncrashed for quite a while

It does crash under Linux, but I was talking about the Windows version, which crashed about one time in 6 months for me, and I'm very aggressive and fast switcher.
