Motherboard: "Click, Click"

Name: Anonymous 2005-09-03 18:34

Just got finished putting together my new system and powered it up. The motherboard immediately started making "click" noises for about 10 seconds, then the system shuts down. I beg the wise users of /comp to help me solve this problem.

System Specs: Chaintech CT-7NJL6 (Motherboard), AMD Athlon XP 3000+ (CPU), Pair of Dual Channelled 512 MB 'Ultra' brand PC3200 DDR 400 MHz RAM, Maxtor 160 GB HDD, Samsung DVD+/-DL RW

I checked the "support" page for the motherboard and it mentioned a common problem involving the computer powering up for a short while, then shutting down (Sounds similar right). Now the proposed solution to this is to  make sure that the heatsink and the CPU have thermal compound applied and that the heatsink is securely fitted against the CPU. After trying this twice, I'm unsure it's the correct solution.

make sure you have all of your power plugs in place. look at the corner of your motherboard perhaps, there could be a sqaure 4 plug connector you might have missed, as i did this once myself. though i can't remember exactly what happened why i tried to boot. if your heatsink is on correctly, that shouldn't realy be the problem. check your mb book for jumpers as well, make sure everything is in teh right order and stuff.

There's 4 plug connector on my motherboard. I've triple check all the jumpers too. Any other advice anyone might have?

correction, there's NO 4 plug connector on my motherboard.

Make sure everything's plugged in and firmly seated. Check heatsink, RAM, cards, drives, everything. Make sure nothing's blocking fans. If that doesn't reveal the problem, start unplugging things until it works.

Note:  On the off-chance that you're an idiot, do *not* unplug the CPU fan when troubleshooting.

Motherboards frequently have an onboard PC speaker which is capable of making tones or click-y noises.

age for truth. in fact, almost all motherboard are capable of making noise, whether a click or beep, with no speakers plugged in at all.

A BEEP IS NOT A CLICK

Clicks from something without speakers or moving parts is a Very Bad Thing™.  Is it still under warranty, and do you still have the box and receipt?  You're going to need 'em, if it really was the mobo clicking.

Don't change these.
