torrent and linux

I'm looking for a good linux bit torrent app.  Sorta like Azureus where it'll save which ones you're downloading/etc and so you dont have to save the .torrent file and click it every time you want to start downloading/seeding again.  I don't want Azureus though because it's Java ;X.

I use the python bt client. The gui version seemed buggy so I use the curses version.

Also the language it's implemented in shouldn't be what you're basing your decision on unless you're planning on hacking the code. If it works it works, who cares if Java isn't leet.

I specifically said I don't want Java because it's a waste of CPU cycles.

If I had to pick something other than Azureus, it'd be the Python BT client, curses version just like Christy McJesus reccomends. I used it before I used Azureus.

CPU isn't a valid reason any longer for rejecting a java app, but memory is. Remember, this is supposed to be a background app. For some people this may not matter, but for the rest of us we'd rather use something leaner (since we never look at it anyway).

Not all of the features.  I just want a neat looking GUI.  And SOME of the features.  Like it'll save what you were downloading...

I know Qtorrent does that but it looks ugly.

I'm sick of this "just get more ram!" bullshit. My 286 did almost as much functionality-wise as my current multi-ghz machine. Yeah, really. Sure, there was no multi-tasking, but I did the mostly the same things as I do today.

Hello, fuckers, just because you can eat ram doesn't mean you should. It costs money and also reduces the number of programs you can run.

I can see it now: in another ten years programs will have minimum footprint of 1GB, but they'll just do more of the same.

a stick of 512 costs me 36 bucks, I think even a kid can save for less than a month and afford that.

You know if your Java program is taking up lots of memory and running slowly it's probably because it's been written badly. Like any language, there are performance hacks - in the case of Java it's "flyweight programming" which essentially boils down to using factory classes to avoid spawning lots of useless objects everywhere.

Not that I'm a Java fanboy (if anything I'm a Lisp fanboy) but "zoomj java is slow" ticks me off. Anyone can write a slow program in any language.

And my pc does not bog down(try putting like 8mb*or more* of cache in the settings, it could help with system performance). Out of the 20 java programs that I have used, only one of them is truely slow on all of the systems that I've used.

I mean, what does Azureus actually do? I can have Opera open with 15 different tabs, and it uses 45MB. Sucking torrents down is no where near the complexity of rendering a whole pile of webpages, including a mail, news, and irc client, etc...

I don't know whether editing an image SHOULD take a lot of memory, but programs like Photoshop and GIMP have always been memory hogs.  Professional graphic artists who use Photoshop and apply a dozen simultaneous filters to a big image may have a gig of RAM in their machines, and they use it all.

Of course it does. I don't know about others, but I typically edit images around four times final resolution, then resize down. So for ye olde 4:3 ratio, let's say 1024*768, I'd be editing at 4096*3072. At 8-bit color ARGB that comes to 4096*3072*4 = 48MB just for the base layer.

Add a few dozen layers to that mix and I easily go over ~300MB. Add several images open that I'm working on or using as reference, varies from 1/2 - 1GB.

Of course, I'm just a hobbyist. The pros quite often work at higher resolutions, higher bitdepths, etc, etc. They need all the RAM they can get.
