my machine:
P4 2.0
dual channel ddr 512/400*2
poworcolor radeon9800pro 128mb 256bit

does cpu have anything to do with that?

Have you gone into the BIOS and turned on AGP Fast Writes?
Have you turned on all hardware video acceleration?
What resolution are you running the game at?  Do you have VSYNC turned on or off?  What are your settings for image quality and anisotropic filtering?

afp fast write enabled, hardware vdo acce, all turned on

and i ran the game at 1024x768, vsync on
image quality = highest

I'd expect people would get 80fps in HL2 using a 256mb r9800pro instead of a 128mb, and using a faster processor. They probably run the game at lower settings as well.
The odds of you needing 8xAF are... well... low. Try lowering that, unless you definitely think you're seeing a huge difference with it. (possibly try AA?)

Additionally, I never really saw much of a purpose for vsync, so maybe try turning that off. Additionally, try benching yourself when you're past the airboat part. That mean old helicopter rapes most graphics cards through the water effects. :x

hm....  i see something interesting

What? You mean there are people who don't realize that AA has a large cost?

Pretty graphics isn't free. You pay in cycles.

i mean, fps doesnt reduce much when i turn on the AA, and hell, 4xAA and 6xAA got exactly the same fps

that airboat part with the helicopter pissed me off at first, but now i can rape it in 5mins

the coolest thing ever was when you had to make a mad dash to that door the first time the helicopter shows up in the open sewers before the airboat

if you stick your head back out the door the helicopter waits for you there and shoots a blast at the door

coolest part of the game, it waits there forever untill you go down the stairs... i just stayed at the door throwing barrels out  and sticking my head out real quick... the helicopter would shoot up the barrels and shoot at the door

that was the coolest part of hl2, that helicopter and the doorway before the staircase... it looked so awesome i just spent 20 mins there in awe of the graphics and event scripting

It's probably your processor, dem physics take alot.

so ur saying i should get a new processor?
what will you recommend?

Disable VSync and try 800x600 if you can bear with it. Make sure you have AGP8X enabled. I don't think 256 MB VRAM would help over 128 MB, actually, I doubt the game even takes advantage of all that.

Oh, and run Ad-aware, Spybot, and an antivirus, and make sure you don't have Internet Explorer-ware, I mean spyware/malware.

Don't change these.
