He's not on that list and there is no one on it with 83 cuts...

I'm not entirely sure but doesn't the one at the far right read similar to 'Matsumoto'? I don't think it's Norio but what are other Matsumotos working on high-profile feature films?
I'm even less sure if the thing at the right looks like an '83' or not.

I would've never noticed that if you didn't point it out. The first kanji is too blurry for me though. Maybe it could be him after all.

Someone should do a "sakuga documentary".
Visiting all the great animators in their daily life, doing interviews, showing material and so on.

Mitsuo Iso did an update on his website.
He still exists.

The updates refers to a book named 「なめらかな社会とその敵」

It looks rather nice. I should look at one of those 2D animated features from France someday.

Shitty western animation, Japanese animation is the top in the world! Japanese animators have mastered the medium. Before the 90s, no other animation was good, only Japan mastered it in the 90s.

Beautiful animation. GREAT, expressive and masterful. I will never forget this animation. I'm glad that this great movie was made. Jin-Roh is really masterful. Thanks for this great journey.

Honneamise on Backgrounds, take out 5cm/s and put Garden of Words, Arriety is the Ghibli film you want for BGs.

3DCG - Ghiblies 2

I'm not sure "minimalism" needs to be a category here. But for simple rough designs that move a lot, Nobita's Dinosaur (2006) and Wanwa should go there. Maybe Nijiiro Hotaru too.

Western influences - Ringing Bell, Unico, Little Jumbo (all Sanrio films).

I stand by my argument that this is badly-animated

The beginning had some movement, the rest was a slideshow.

The finished ad is an innovative combination of 2D stop motion drawings shot on a 3D set, a process that Dear initially explored as a student, and also in some of the music videos he has created that were shown to the agency as part of the pitch (see more of Dear’s work here). “I remembered something that I was doing when I was a student,” he explains, “which was to do illustrations, cut them out and place them in front of the camera and make these almost pantomime-y sets with them. Photograph them and then you get lens effects and focal depth and lens flares and things, but they’ve still got an illustrative quality.”

The pioneer of this technique is Taijin Takeuchi.
http://youtu.be/rmkLlVzUBn4

His version is less expensive, but it's exactly the same thing.
He used photographs instead of drawings.

I think Taijin's work has more impact, because when I watch it I can see all the effort that was put into that.

There is a lot more work in the Bear animation, but the problem is that it makes no sense to do this, because if you haven't seen the making of, you will never find out that it was made this way. You can achieve the exact same thing digitally with less money and less time, just with After Effects.

Holy shit, this must've been more expensive than Kaguya Hime.

Name: Anonymous 2013-11-12 9:40

That's hardly the same thing and that video is hardly the first one to make stuff like that (stop motion with photos). Dear's video with the bear and the hare really is innovative in some way, on the other hand. Also, FUCK! I was thinking about a similar process with glass panels and miniature cardboard sets - it came to me while watching toku shows. His method is actually more clever and cost effective than what I had in mind. Although I'm not sure the same you can achieve the same photography effects Still looks so good. Props to the guy.

if you haven't seen the making of, you will never find out that it was made this way

This is actually a plus, not a negative. Or just a difference in aesthetic standards. To make an analogy, it's the same as visible brush strokes on oil pantings - if you like impressionistic stuff, you'll want visible brush strokes. If you want to go for a neo-classical style, you'll want to cover brush strokes as much as possible.
