comic to manga

We have seen lately that Marvel and DC have been adapting some of their charas/licenses to a manga style some times with good results and other times with plain shit results.
We have seen them inviting real japanese artists like Kia Asamiya to work on titles like Batman or some chapters of X-Men but also they have tryed with some local artists that supposedly can draw manga like Pat Lee, Adam Warren, Kevin Lau, UDON, Ryan Kinnaird and others that i can't remember at this time.
The point is... If they could import more Japanese Artist for work on some of their other licenses/characters, who would you like to see working on what character/license?

I would like to see Masami Kurumada working on Wonder Woman so I could see her with some armour designed by him even if he knows shit about women's anatomy.

I also would like to see Masakasu Katsura working on Batman just because he has said that he is a great fan of him and would be cool to see what can he do on him.

And by the last I would like to see Nobuhiro Watsuki on X Men because he already have tryed to do something similar to this on Rurouni Kenshin.

A lot of times manga style is used as a gimmick-

Death Manga
Teen Titans Manga
Marvel Mangaverse
X-Men Adventures manga
Gen 13 Bootleg
Antarctic Press (everything tries to emulate manga)

Other times artists just seem to use manga techniques, like Image/Top Cow, with good and bad results.  Most of the time their characters and stories resort to "bad girl" cliches or overly done fantasy or superhero sci-fi with no purpose.

Then there are US adult comics that try (and usually fail), like  "Milk!"  Even furry comics attempt to be manga sometimes... but still fail.

You should check out Wolverine Snikt!, by Tsutomu Nihei (yes, the BLAME! dude). Weird, weird tale, and Wolvie is a total badass. Also give a try to Batman Child of Dreams by Asamiya.

Oh, and my 2 cts on the artists already mentioned: Pat Lee used to be good, nowadays he sucks. Kevin Lau I don't mind, but he is generic at best. UDON rocks, thir Darkstalker and SF stuff is pretty top tier. Ryan Kinnaird is a shitty Shirow wannabe. Adam Warren is god, but the fucker hardly draws new stuff. Antartic Press, the only good thing about them is Fred Perry. He is hit or miss, but his comic is geniunely funny and probaly the closest thing I've seen to Manga narrative and plot in americna comics.

But what japanese artist would you like to see working on what american title?

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-15 15:10

All of them.  Fucking ugly US art.

I'd love to see Shirow drawing whatever wacky sci-fi idea Grant Morrison has in his twisted mind.

Kentaro Miura on either Punisher or Conan

Yasuhiro Nightow doing a Spiderman comic

Otomo would be prfect for The Ultimates

How anyone can put up with Frank Quitely's art is beyond me.

www.spilledmilk.com looks like it would fit the manga style if done right

Which doesn't have any relevance with the topic in question

i would like to see Wonder Woman being drawed by studio fantasia that is the same team that made Aika and Megami Paradise but also i would like that Kurumada could be the armour designer.
It would be awesome to see her in one of those armours like those of the saints of atena.
She could be wearing something similar to a gold saint armour or something like the armour of Athena.

I woukd like to see Clamp drawing Ironman.

Clamp Sucks but Haruhiko Mikimoto could be a good choice for Ironman.

Or both, a weeabo!

Did anybody happen to check out the "I [heart] Marvel" mini-series last february? I kinda forgot about it until I saw this thread. It's supposed to have stuff by 'Slayers' creator Hajime kanzaka on it. Is it any good?

I liked that one panel of Batman Katsura drew in his I's run. Also, Watsuki was saying something about the character Venom in the Kenshin manga. He even drew a small sketch. Any idea what's all that about?

My dream project would be Katsura on Birds Of Prey. And...Akira Toriyama on JLA!

Katsura on BOP? Im not sure but Toriyama would be awesome for JLA. It would be very funny to see Supaman in the JL.

Gag! That thought makes me retch. Too much cute, too little substance. Yukito Kishiro would be superior. (Clamp...bleh)

>>15

Haruhiko Mikimoto's style would NOT fit. Plus, his technology style is not up to code for Ironman. Too much beautiful, too little hardcore...I'm just sayin'

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-31 15:31

Toriyama, would not do JLA justice. His style isn't serious enough.

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-31 18:02

Kouta Hirano working on Deadpool would be the greatest thing ever

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-31 18:26

That would work.

That's the point. An over-the-top,all-action JLA, with cool and colorful costumes with lots of big stuff getting blown up.

...Superman, in bright blue, dealing a 'kameha-style' giant heat-vision beam on an andriod Brainiac. The beam knocks Brainiac down. He crashes on a mountain, shattering it on impact...
...I want to imagine it!( ̄ー ̄)

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-01 15:38

JLA is already over the top with colorful costumes and big stuff getting blown up. Just think that Triyama's style is a little cornball for JLA. Tho, I'd love to see it if it had JLA vs. Ginyu force. That would own.

I feel that Masashi Kishimoto would be supreme at doing JLA that has some meaning to it.

If all of this could happen, I think it would not be like the versions all of we know but something totally different just borrowing the basic concepts of the stories. I would be totally redesigned almost from zero.

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-02 18:38

That's cool, but the idea of cutesy versions of serious characters, kinda turns my stomach. Re-design is great, But I want to see hard core stuff. This means getting the hard core talents from the east. Cute, just doesn't do it for me...

Look at Metropolis, It was very good and had depth to it. I'm just as entertained by it as the original.

Then look at Star Wars Manga, Yuck! The style really didn't fit at all, IMO.

Frankly, most of the folks out today cannot compare to the likes of Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, Yukito Kishiro, Osamu Tezuka, etc, etc...

If you're gonna do it, do it right. All the edgy costumes (Which are very  much the rave these days) and such are no match doing justice to an age old series.

If someone does batman, I want it to be the very ESSENCE of batman, not just new edgy batman beyond type of junk or chobits with batman on the title. That would fail hard.

I want to see Suehiro Maruo do something in the Marvel or DC lines, maybe knock off a few people in his own special way that are just wasting ink by hanging around. Like how many guys do we have that use ice or fire exclusively?

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-03 23:54

YES! That's what I'm talking about. HARDCORE! That would own with an iron fist from on high.

Don't change these.
