Ayn Rand

I was watching a documentary and they claimed that her works are the second most influential after the Bible. I find this rather hard to believe.

It would depend on ones definition of "influential" (which, being completely relative, no one could state as "fact"). Her work has been influential, but I'd say has effected nowhere near as many lives as the Qu'ran, Tao te Ching, or even the Book of Mormon. In terms of non-religious books, I'd say she isn't as influential as Montesquieu, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Camus or A.A. Milne.

That logic sounds a little bit bull-shitty to me. Adam Smith has probably influenced a lot more executives than Rand.

Despite the fact Ayn Rand is not particularly original or philosophically important her work does play an important and acknowledged role in the lives of some extremely powerful figures.

One thing people tend to forget about Rand's fiction is that the most important part of those stories are not the economical implications of her philosophy, but the moral ones.

Try stripping away anything economical from it and what do you have left? An objective axiom against any and all kinds of slavery, INCLUDING debt/wage slavery. It's funny that people apply her views to a population of people (but I can understand why they do) when they should be looked at in the case of the individual. Would you say it is wrong to only life your life by your own will, and not the will imposed on you by force? I consider myself a pretty moral guy, at least in the average american sense, and I love supporting charities that work to make our world a better place, but I also fully subscribe to Rand's philosophical view. Now all my adult life, I've been told that I shouldn't give to charities if I like Rand's works. Why the hell not? Is it not my choice to do with my wealth as I see fit?

People stopped realizing, or either do not realize, that Rand is not against charitable acts, she was against FORCING charitable acts. And I think anyone with a  brain could see why.

The thing I really don't like about Ayn Rand is that she wrote her whole philosophy as if nobody had ever written anything in the same vein before. Its a sort of philosophical revisionism. Existentialism was all about individuality, but to her and other conservatives it was intolerable because existentialists accepted some Marxist ideas, such as dialectical materialism.

It's nice to see that she has been totally appalled by her nemesis Le Guin in recent times. Her moral implications were chiefly theorically plausible, as those of Le Guin's anarchism. But at least Le Guin is mature enough to give different approaches to different ideals instead of just hurr egotistical.
