Why do people (especially women) like it so much?
For the same reason people like Lord of the Flies, Animal Farm and others. Its a part of the typical high school curriculum. Pretty much everyone in America under 30 was forced to read it (or pretend to read it) so for many people it was one of the few books they ever read, so they namedrop it whenever the subject of their favorite book comes up.

This is true. I had to read Animal Farm back in high school, and at the time I didn't care for it that much, though even back then I knew the message it was trying to convey. I haven't read it since then, I should see if I still have my copy lying around.

Haven't read Lord of the Flies, but then again, my high school was shit. Regardless, Animal Farm should be read by everyone at least once.
