Help I don't understand poetry

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-02 18:02

It is all pretentious shit and makes no sense

(Except Japanese haiku; for some reason they really get to me. OH, and in the ORIGINAL JAPANESE, not the shitty English "translations.")

With that piss-poor attitude, I wouldn't expect you to understand a technical manual.

Well technical manuals can be pretty flowery and ostentatious at times you have to agree

I know what you mean. I read a lot of books, but I can't really get into most poetry. I really dig Bukowski's poetry though, probably because it's so blunt and to the point.

hey op i have a similar problem but mine is caused by the fact that i dont have any emotions that poetry could possibly stir because deep down im a void and incredibly shallow

i understand this is common

Poetry, like literary fiction, has become the province of bores. I agree that haikus and other short poems are okay if attached to something else, like if a novel opens with a short poem to introduce the mood or a theme, but I don't actively search for good poetry.

All you have to do to discover if a medium is worth your time is to look at the demographic. I look at the type of people who read poetry and I know that I do not want to end up like that, so I'm pretty sure that poetry is not for me.

What things do you like? I want to know to avoid them so I don't become like you.

I felt that way for many years, then T.S.Eliot struck a chord.  I've come to understand that poetry is to the written word what song is to speech.  I'll bet if you keep at it, someday someones voice will resonate.

That's awfully unfortunate but it's no surprise that you're too socially inept to figure out how to pick up chicks on your own. I feel for u bro

You perfectly understand it, you just don't have enough experience with it.

As with all thigs, 99.9% of poetry is pure garbage and people praising it are complete idiots. All you encounter on forums, or retarded women recommend you, is generally garbage. Popular modern poets are mostly horrible whiny little fags who aim at Linking Park kids - albeit the kind that's trying to be edgy through "true art" instead of pop.

Here's a good poem, see if you do or don't understand it, or what. (It's Robert Frost.)

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there's some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

That's fantastic. Now why don't you go give yourself a wedgie because you must have developed some kind of sexual fetish for it given the sheer amount of them you received in high school

As it's said in Andrey Tarkovskiy's "Nostalghia", it's better to throw poetry away then to try and translate it into another language. Every stanza, line, word, must be seen as it was written. If you want to appreciate Japanese haiku written in Japanese, then learn Japanese.

This isn't to say English haiku is inferior, but it is unique to English and likewise should not be translated into Japanese.

Actually it is inferior

After reading your later posts I have concluded that your are both retarded.

>>18

Is right, not >>19. Poetry is all about using and understanding the quirks of a language and its attached culture to express interesting ideas and stories within exceedingly confining limitations. I'm not the biggest fan of the stuff either, but take a look at >>22 and see how the poet was able to convey so much atmosphere, character, and emotion through only four stanzas. That's the important part, and you simply cannot get the same meaning in a different language that belongs to an entirely different culture.

You keep using that word, I do not think you know what it means.

Where has anyone used "pretentious" in this thread apart from >>21 and the OP?

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-10 20:05

read some bukowski. he writes really entertaining poetry thats easy to understand.

I'm referring to this board in general. You'll be hard pressed to find a thread without the word "pretentious" somewhere in it.

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-11 0:00

>>25

Well, you'd be doubly hard pressed to find a thread without pretentiousness all the fuck over it.

There is no pretentiousness here. Quit being such a pretentious ass

Don't change these.
