Depressing reads

Any recommendations for depressing stuff?

I've already read The Bell Jar.

A Separate Peace is nice and depressing, but I hated it. Personally, I don't like depressing books. It's easy to write a depressing book, it isn't easy to write a sad book.

Anything else?

I could go for some sad too, by the way.

The Book Thief - Markus Zusak
1984 - George Orwell
The Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald
Cat's Cradle - Kurt Vonnegut
Flowers for Algernon - Daniel Keyes
Perhaps The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, although I didn't love that one.

For some reason I can think of a lot more sad childrens' books than adult books.

"Jude: The Obscure" By Thomas Hardy
The king of making you revile, pity, and identify with, horribly unfortunate characters and their equally horribly unfortunate lives.

"Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley
Another depressing tale of the Human condition, when faced with tough decisions.

"Querencia" by Stephen Bodio
Kind of a self autobiography for about a 7 year span.  Not REALLY depressing, but it puts you into a really somber mood whilst reading.

That's all I can think of, off the top of my head.  If any more come to mind I'll make another post.

Gatsby is a terribly boring read, and an over-hyped one at that.
Shame on you.

Perdido Street Station by China Mieville.

Might not be your thing if you don't like fantasy, or it might if you're tired of the usual LotR rip-offs. Either way, few things are quite as soul crushingly depressing as the ending to that book.

The Stranger by Albert Camus is depressing without directly playing on maudlin emotions.
Is this what you mean when you want sad without the depression, or is it the other way around? I'm just under the impression that /books/ doesn't like overly romantic or emotional books, so I might delude myself.

This post is the equivalent of saying "Herp derp, bashing Christianity is fun, it makes me nonconformist and cool." It's a pretty good read, assuming you're intelligent enough to understand some of the original Hebrew and Greek words and their proper translations, but given your remark I don't think you are.

Read "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy

Not my intention, I was just joking. Sorry to have incensed you. Although I don't believe in God, I don't see any reason why anyone else shouldn't.

By the way, I'm Israeli, and although the words are sometimes a bit archaic, yes, I do understand the Hebrew.

Well, I'm happy that we've come to a compromise.

I'm just so tired of pretentious fucks saying things like that just to stir people up. Whether you're Christian or not, it still features some moving language, just like any other religious text.

The bible is not just a Christian writing.

If you want to get depressed, just wait for someone you love to die or somehting.

WHy would you want to get depressed on purpose? It doesn't feel good at all.

If you think The Bell Jar was good, try The Taco Bell Jar. It's like The Bell Jar with a hispanic spin.

Shit opens up doors, man.
