I'm new here

Alright /book/, just discovered this board.  Never knew 4chan had textboards before today.  Whatever.

What should I know about this board?  Not trying to troll, just don't know what goes on here.  How fast is the board?  What kinds of books does /book/ like or dislike?  I'm mostly sci-fi and fantasy.  What's /book/'s stance on fanfiction?

Name: Anonymous 2009-12-01 20:44

We're slow. Like, really, really slow.

We will generally discuss anything, though there are a few snobs among us that will shun the Fantasy/Sci-Fi types.

I don't know if we have a stance on fanfiction.

I find some fanficton amusing and then there is the "others".

We are slow. Compared to the imageboards, very slow. But compared to other English-language textboards on the internet, we're not that bad.

we need a /lit/ imageboard

/lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/ /lit/

This board is extremely slow.

It's also probably the only good text board.

Please post here often.

Same here. 1st time poster. I haven't sat down and read a book in a LONG time. I came to this board to see what other people are suggesting/reading.

Also lurking:
https://www.7chan.org/lit/

So /book/, any books you guys like to suggest for someone getting back into reading? I was thinking about stopping by the library and picking up The Alchemist by Paolo Coelho, as I've heard pretty good things about it.

I heard The Alchemist is terrible
If you are trying to get back into reading first think about shows and movies you like.
Then find similar things or, in some cases, there literary originals.
/book/ is slow but I love /book/

OP here.  This board seems to have very little trolling, which I'm definitely okay with (just weird for 4chan).  Definitely slow, but not bad.  I'll stay and try and post often.

Like I said in OP, I'm a fantasy/sci-fi guy mostly.  Wheel of Time, Sword of Truth, Dune, Endymion sort of things.  I'd recommend any of them.

Hmm, never thought about it that way.

This board is extremely slow because we're too busy reading.

Actually it's because five or so people regularly post here.

Well then OP, reread Dune and then try and go forward from there if you like. If you want a semi serious Scifi with a message I found something like that in Starship Troopers. It's not hard to read and it is pretty enjoyable and made me think a bit.

This is probably true.

Name: Anonymous 2009-12-03 15:32

OP here.  Read starship troopers and liked it.  Not actively looking for new stuff though, at least not until classes are done.

Okay, so yea, once they are done just follow the guide I outlined here: >>9
And enjoy and keep posting on /book/

Oh and feel free to read The Alchemist, I have heard bad things but I don't know how the rest of /book/ feels.

Name: Anonymous 2009-12-13 21:26

Read The Alchemist a while back. It's not bad-bad, it's just not got very much to say and it's written in an affected "look how simple yet deep I am" manner. Like an adult version of The Little Prince.

Name: Anonymous 2009-12-13 21:56

I don't like Coelho. I think he's a dick.

He's also pretentious and often tries to give the impression of being "deep" with barely saying anything meaningful.

Don't change these.
