Jonathan Safran Foer

I really liked Jonathan Safran Foer until he wrote that book Eating Animals and then went on Ellen bitching about the meat industry.

Anyone else feel the same way?

It's not like I have a problem with Vegans. If you don't want to eat meat, then don't. But I'd rather they don't write books about how it's a matter of concern that humans are eating meat. You stopped eating meat because you couldn't in good conscience stomach consuming animals. Well, I can in good conscience eat animals. So I will.

The whole thing reminds me of a quote from JM Coetzee's Disgrace: "to me animal-welfare people are a bit like Christians of a certain kind. Everyone is so cheerful and well-intentioned that after a while you itch to go off and do some raping and pillaging. Or to kick a cat."

If he feels that people eating meat is a serious problem, I don't really have a problem with him trying to make people aware of that.

Coetzee actually wrote a book about animal rights as well, so you might not want to quote him there.

It's indeed hard not to sound like a cheerful cunt when arguing for becoming a vegan or even a vegetarian, but the facts are that it's one of the easy things that can be done to stop global warming. Not caring about that is indefendable. So at he realized that. Is he a vegan himself?

Though Foer (I'm always wondering wether his last name is actually Safran Foer? It sounds kinda ridiculous) might have chosen a too dramatic tone or whatever, I haven't read that book yet. I did think he was too romantic about jews in Everything is Illuminated.
