The Count of Monte Cristo

So I'm about 20 pages into this so far and it seems interesting right now. So I'm going to stick with it but I want to know what everyone elses opinion on it is.

Read it too long ago to have a memory, but just wanted to mention that you might also like to look into Stephen Fry's The Stars' Tennis Balls, which is a modern CoMC.

It is kick-ass.

I liked it better when it was called Gankutsuou

Get out.

Seriously though, the Count is badass, and goes through a pretty big transformation (as in personality change).

This is my favorite book of all time.  I've read it six times.  Bump so other people will see it and hopefully get the opportunity to enjoy it.

Get out.
That wasn't the proper response.

Gankutsuou is a pretty good adaptation.

I started reading it a couple years ago, ad really enjoyed it until about 500 pages in I got bored and quit. maybe I'll start over, I think I brain farted for a few chapters and was just reading mechanically, and then got lost or something.

Then let me explain then that yes, Gankutsuou was a well done anime. It was interesting to see just how classic literature could be turned into an anime. The animation style was interesting, and I didn't even mind the sci-fi input. However out of all the literature books that had/suggested homosexuality, Count of Monte Cristo wasn't exactly one of them, so I found that the creators' choice for Gankutsuou to include it was strange. Not that it was an overwhelming amount, and not that I care about such things... but some of the characters were also drastically changed. It was the interesting personalities of the characters (mostly the Count) that caused me to enjoy the book.

So to me, Count of Monte Cristo >>>> Gankutsuou. Some people may not like reading long books, so that may be why they liked the anime better, so it's just an opinion.

It's even a bit wackier than what you described. Eugenie was a strongly implied canon lesbian and she eloped with her piano teacher in the book. Gonzo threw that out and instead injected tons of male homolust into the anime. I still wonder why they gave up that opportunity.

That being said, my main disappointment with Gankutsuou is how they changed the book end and by making the Count irredeemably evil and consumed by revenge they basically changed the whole core premise of the outcome, which was actually uplifting and encouraging and leaves you with a feeling of FUCK YEAH at the end.

To OP: Have fun. You've got a great read ahead of you, deserving of being called a 'classic'. Depending on the edition and whether it's abridged or not, the "pre-Count" parts of the story can drag a bit, but once Edmond begins his new life, it's a captivating read right till the end.

I don't think _anyone_ that read the novel first, enjoyed the altered ending. Like >>13, the setting is refreshing and didn't detract much from the plot. Maybe the fact that it remained quite loyal to the overarching plot made me quite frustrated at the ending. I also had a gripe with that fight scene; that was some unnecessary mecha, as well as some unnecessary melodrama that followed.

Oh lawd, they keep the Count evil and grimdark throughout the entire series? I bought the first DVD, then watched a couple more past those episodes, and stopped. Does it ever come to that scene in the book (that I faintly remember) where the Count, Albert, and Mercedes meet together in a garden/party? My memory is bad...

Yeah, I like mecha and action as much as the next person, so it's obvious why the directors put that stuff in there. But the series didn't get that popular anyway. They could've toned all of the modern mainstream stuff down a bit, because you can just tell it's a show that won't be super popular. Not that animation directors want to believe such things...
