So, I'm thinking of readin "The catcher in the rye". I heard it's a bit overrated. What are your thoughts on this book?

It's short. I'd say it's worth reading especially since it is such a popular book. You might be turned off by the incredibly negative attitude of the protagonist but just go with it. There is growth of character and it's not a bad book.

It's short. It's extremely easy. It's also very good.

The whole book is not so much about the life of Holden (the main character), but rather about the thoughts of one who thinks differently from others. What's truly amazing about the book is how it captures Holden's thought process so well. If Holden were real, he could be quickly labeled as a thousand different disorders, but in the book everything Holden does is rationalized so well that you can sympathize with him. Holden is the part of your brain that you have kept hidden away in favor of logic-- he is raw emotion personified.

It's a comming of age story. And it is pretty overrated, depending on your tastes. To me, nothing of real interest happened in the story.

Go ahead and read it anyway, tho. It's a classic book that everybody's heard of, and is referenced all the time. It's short and easy. And who knows... maybe you will like it?

So was it good/bad? I'm not familiar with livejournal.

Bad overly whiny

Liveournal is like an ever so slightly more intelligent networking thing than MySpace. That is, people there think they're more intelligent, so they try (and fail) to act like it, too. And Catcher is exactly like that.

Just like this board on 4chan - /book/

No, retard, 4chan is not a social networking site. Before you say anything stupid, I'll clarify: it's a messageboard with pictures, not a blog.

I agree with this anon. I thought it was overrated rubbish.

Another vote for 'overrated' - having dirty language and getting banned made the book seen edgy in the past, but in the present it's just a dated book with a whiny protagonist. The only reason to read it is to understand how literature and standards of decency have changed over time, the story itself is kind of boring.

It's over-rated but I love it.

This anon sums it up rather well.  This book was required reading for me back in high school, and at the time it struck me as terrible.  I think it's because I was completely unable to empathize with the supposed protagonist;  A complete loser and unabashed screw up, who used curse words like they were conjunctions.
The whole book put me in the mind of a kid trying to get attention by acting out, only in book form.

This is a very apt description of what all authors actually do...

Not as good as SICP.

It's short enough that it's worth a read no matter what, even if you don't end up liking it. This was teen angst before teen angst was cool.

This is exactly it.  The character growth is a lie, Holden doesn't learn a thing or grow a bit during the entire book, all he does is endlessly repeat the same tired, boring bullshit.  The book was probably edgy and insightful when it came out, now it's boring and obvious.  Go read livejournal, don't waste your money on Catcher in the Rye.
