Are there any 'great' modern books that aren't about drugs?

Simply because he takes drugs doesn't mean his drugs are about drugs. He rarely mentions them really, sometimes not throughout the course of a book.

Er...meant to say his books are about drugs, not his drugs are about drugs. That makes no fucking sense at all.
Probably that joint I've smoked.

In "On Writing" by Stephen King, he says he wrote himself into many of his stories, and that, yes, they came out to be metaphorical of his drug addiction.
Not intentionally, mind you, but they are there. When looking back, he saw the connections.
If you don't read very deeply, you can miss that whole field and not worry about it.

So it was a metaphor for something he never mentions in the book.
Not a drugs book then

Right, not literally about drugs. It's just that, when I read a book, I wonder what the connection the author has to it, what's reflective of the time, and other meanings that can be derived. More habit than decision. Other readers might passively absorb books like they were watching tv or something.  Depends on the reader.

Even though I knew of hip personal life, i didn't automatically think he could only write about it.
I also didn't class all his literature as "drugs" writings simply because i knew if took them. The same way i didn't class all of Poe's stuff that way. Depends on the reader.
