In "On Writing" by Stephen King, he says he wrote himself into many of his stories, and that, yes, they came out to be metaphorical of his drug addiction.
Not intentionally, mind you, but they are there. When looking back, he saw the connections.
If you don't read very deeply, you can miss that whole field and not worry about it.
