My son is 22 and cannot read

"I have a friend whose son is 22 and can't read hardly at all. A long story on how he was passed over and not able to read.

Do you guys have any suggestions on how to help this young man learn how to read?

I home-schooled my kids but would you use the same type curriculum to teach an adult to read?

My sister couldnt read either. Although she was an honor roll student and graduated top of her class and is going on to be a teacher. During college though It was brought to my families attention that she couldnt read and she was being taught to read. In her 2nd year of college.

Sure she can be smart, but she lacks a very crucial skill. Unless she was getting someone else to write all of her essays and papers for her, or to take all of her tests (which would be cheating, by the way) it is literally impossible for someone to function like that and still come out ahead.

These must be some very stupid people in this thread. There have been people who cannot read that done well on quizzes and are pretty smart. I've read about this subject a lot. However all of the smart ones usually tend to go to Chatter school where they are willing to help them out with text. Also having somebody else take the test for you isn't cheating you retards. As long as the guy tells the person who is filling out the answers their answer and looks like the problem in their heads. It's their answer and not the person taking it for them.

So, if the people who have normal vision but cannot read are "pretty smart", then why won't they learn to read? I mean, that's the smartest thing anyone could do, for the simple reason that it opens so many doors and potential career paths for them. To me, these people are just lazy/stupid/helpless enough to not get help, i.e. learn to read.

And comparing those people to blind people is simply idiotic. Visually impaired people can be successful and lead content lives even without knowing how to read braille, but that's because, if their parents want them to be able to cope in this world, it's pretty much obligatory to give them all the help, information and guidance they need. How else would they learn?
