Most gruelling book you have read?

Something you were really struggling with but your willpower kept you reading.

Parasite Eve. Once I realized that the mitochondria had a crush on a scientist I knew I was in for a bad ride. Once people started spontaneously combusting because of mitochondria powers, I wanted nothing more than to throw the book out of the window.

Walden. Jesus Christ.

I havent read a lot of bad books, but Forest Mage by Robin Hobb was pretty rough going.  Ill probably read the others anyway though, since I was dumb enough to buy all 3 in hardcover without reading it at all.

Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead was by far the most gruelling and painful read I've ever experienced. Upon reflection, I enjoyed parts of it, but my god that book made me rage.

LOL anon, I just wanted to post the exact same thing. Luckily I stole the books. I read Shaman's Crossing which was still somewhat bearable if really tedious - but it at least left you hope that it would get better - and then the whole thing devolved into one huge emo I'M SO FAT BAWWWWWWWW shitfest on EVERY FUCKING PAGE in the second book.

Glad I didn't waste money on this shit.

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-15 12:29

Tale of Two Cities... Might just be me, but Dickens might be the least interesting writer of all time.

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-15 14:23

L'morte D'arthur

Although I didn't actually read the whole thing. I read like 800 of its 1100 pages though... it had it's moments but it was just so dry.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. That goddamn Southern English. Quite the "coarse ignorant language for coarse ignorant people," to quote a review of the book.

The Fountainhead: I quit halfway.

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-18 3:09

Crime & Punishment. It was like reading a brick. 80 pages in, I realized I neither knew nor cared what was going on, and quit.

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-18 9:31

Wuthering Heights

It has a decent plot so I forced myself to continue but there was just something about the prose that didn't engage me.

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-18 12:10

Finnegans Wake

I read it simply because I wanted to put my money where my mouth was. It was a difficult task; it was nonsensical; it was stupid. In the end, however, I was able to finish it and that at least gave me leverage in declaring it personally my worst book of all time. I needed to wash my brain afterward with Faulkner. It was just so bad.

Totally agree with you. Holy fucking shit, it was worthless. But at least I can insult it all I want, I fucking finished reading it.

Wuthering Heights had me wanting to personally kill the entire cast of characters for about the entirety of the novel, and though the book itself isn't bad, I'd probably become a serial murderer if I perused through it a second time.

Foucault's Pendulum.

I didn't know what the hell they were talking about half the time.

Name: Anonymous 2008-09-07 18:55

The Rule of Four by Ian Caldwell and Dustin Thomason

It seemed to have no real plot at all. I honestly cannot remember anything about it and did not enjoy reading it at all.

Name: Anonymous 2008-09-07 20:44

Magician by Raymond E Feist. Good story the second time you read it, but first time it seemed insanely chaotic - spending 100 pages with a character then changing to another, so you kind of forget what's happening with each.

Name: Anonymous 2008-09-08 15:06

>39 how many days did you spend on it?
reading it in 2 days doesn't left you that confused.

Ivan Goncharov's Oblomov first half is boring as hell but second half make you crave for more.
